Interestingly those five US metro areas add up to a larger population than Canada. Or another way to look at it, Toronto is 17% of Canada's population. NYC is 6% of the USA. So Toronto has a larger influence nationally than any given US city. What does this mean? No idea. Just interesting to me.

1/ In March 2025, shortly after his return to power, Donald Trump’s administration postponed the compliance deadline for the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule by 30 months. That moved it back from January 20, 2026, to July 20, 2028. We are now paying the price.

Excellent points in this thread about the infrastructure to do novel science. I especially agree with the point: "...the folks making these decisions don't understand fundamentally how science works." I see it in the NSF calls, the OSTP report, and elsewhere.

We should all be worried about "dynamic pricing." That's when companies change their prices in real time. If it's hot out, the cost of ice cream could go up. If it's cold, tea bags could go up. It's a way for giant companies to squeeze you even more.

At a workshop in Chile in 1995, when I was a junior in college, Burbidge invited me to join her and other prominent scientists at their table at the conference dinner. I had just met her. I didn't even know who she was at the time. Her kindness and respect has stuck with me the rest of my life. 🔭 🧪

Perhaps, for reasons, you would like to make text you write more expensive for any LLM to ingest. May I introduce adversarial tokenmaxxing: alex-parker.github.io/tokenmaxxer/ Increase the tokens needed to represent any text by 3-6 times. It seems that l33t may have been ahead of its time.

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.
