I'm considering replacing or adding a piece to the unit where we read a Mallinson & Hudley piece (2010, I think) about teaching k-12 teachers about linguistic discrimination. Has anyone read any of the following 3 articles and have thoughts on what would be best for undergraduate students?

So glad to announce that @thedansimonson.bsky.social's and my most recent article on Mexican slang and gender has been selected to be featured in the showcase of the John Benjamins Publishing Company on Kudos! link.growkudos.com/1eyakr2xa80

Slang and Gender in Mexico
This study examines how two common Mexican Spanish slang phrases — “no mames” (no shit) and “no manches” (no way) — are related to gender. We use Twitter and surveys. We find that both men and women mostly use “no mames” on Twitter, but women use “no manches” more frequently than men. In surveys, speakers provide evidence that many might be unaware of the gendered nature of these phrases. This study contributes to our understanding of slang and gender in everyday social life, showing that gender is relevant in slang online despite speakers being seemingly unaware of how gender affects slang usage in everyday social interactions.

a comic strip. The first panel shows a goblin in a long coat approaching a guard. The second panel has the goblin saying "we're just normal men!". The third panel has the guard replying "what do you mean normal men?". The fourth panel shows both the goblin in the coat and the guard. The coat is beginning to open to show many goblins within. The guard looks suspicious and a goblin emerging from the coat is saying "We're just innocent men!"

"They're not misunderstanding the film; they're co-opting a message"
Screencap from the interview linked in the quoted post

Marlow Stern (the interviewer): You have one of the most renowned replies in Twitter history. Elon Musk tweeted out, “Take the red pill,” then Ivanka Trump enthusiastically wrote, “Taken!” to him, and then you replied, “Fuck both of you.” I’m curious how you feel about the co-opting of “The Matrix” by those on the right who don’t really seem to understand its messaging.

Lilly Wachowski: I mean, I can’t sit in a room and explain the movie to every single person who watches it. Even if I did sit in a room with Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump — yikes — it doesn’t matter. They’re not misunderstanding the film; they’re co-opting a message. And that’s what fascists do: They co-opt the messages of progressives and use it to their benefit to confuse and obfuscate what is going on and the intention of their ideology. They do it with everything. They do it with Martin Luther King Jr. Look at how they’ve changed the idea of what antisemitism is.

IMO particle physics is far less practical than nearly every social science, but people act like it’s the opposite. Like, my guy, quarks will never have an effect on your daily life, but you’re going to be involved in multiple stance triangles every day, and you won’t even be aware of them.
