Social Work Today news post: Too many meetings and not enough protection for children at risk, new guidance warns. Children known to social care services are being subjected to multiple meetings and plans without clear accountability for their safety, according to new guidance from the Youth Endowment Fund. “For children experiencing harm outside the home, the system can feel fragmented and confusing at exactly the moment they need stability and protection. Too often, they are passed between services without anyone clearly accountable for their safety.”

New analysis from The King’s Fund has revealed a significant decline in eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare, with researchers warning that growing numbers of people with complex health needs are being denied support and pushed into means-tested social care. "The drop in CHC eligibility despite no change in the criteria is deeply concerning. It raises questions as to why this is happening and the government should launch a full review into CHC to fully understand this deterioration in eligibility rates."

Social Work Today news post: AI age checks for asylum seekers could create 'major safeguarding risks'. The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has criticised government plans to trial artificial intelligence age estimation technology for asylum seekers, arguing that social workers remain best placed to assess age and warning that errors could have serious consequences for vulnerable young people. "Assessing the ages of migrants is a complex process which social workers are best placed to do. This important task should not be open to shortcuts through artificial intelligence, especially as the pitfalls of getting it wrong can lead to major safeguarding risks."

Social Work Today news post: The Government has unveiled sweeping plans to reform the youth justice system with new intervention courts, expanded parenting orders and a pledge to cut child custodial remand by 25%, as new research highlights the impact of community-based alternatives to detention. The reforms place a particular emphasis on reducing the use of custodial remand for children awaiting trial or sentencing, backed by £5 million to develop community alternatives. One such alternative has emerged from new research by Manchester Metropolitan University, which found that instead of being placed in a typical custodial setting, children could be remanded into local authority accommodation – resulting in sharp decreases in custodial remand, while generating savings of more than £3 million.
