What would I like for my birthday this year? A gagazillion of Americans out celebrating their commitment to the rule of law. Thanks for asking.

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

Blessed are those who pre-order books, for they believe in the future and believe in art and conduct themselves accordingly.

Go big or go home: Ursula von der Leyen has more cojones than the EU heads of state combined. I dearly hope than any pundits claiming this is her last stand are proved wrong.

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.

Capybaras keep their chill while crashing Brazilian legislature
Capybaras have been making surprise visits to a Brazilian state legislature. These chill rodents strolled into the legislative building in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, last week, catching lawmakers off guard.

Only just found out about this For the record, you don't get multiple genetic markers and one of the most effective medications known to science with 'social constructs' Channel 4, this is, in scientific parlance, an absolute fu*king disgrace that will genuinely endanger lives #c4 #ADHD
New Channel 4 documentary, The Great ADHD Myth?, seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct

The people most allergic to AI on the left are often the ones most invested in the idea that knowledge work is inherently dignified and shouldn't be automated, which is a craft guild position, not a Marxist one.

REBUILD LOCAL NEWS
Here's how Illinois news providers described the immediate or expected impact of the credits during its 2025 rollout:
• A larger publisher said the credit
"allowed us to... save jobs and roles that we did not have to make cuts for."
• A small publisher spoke to its potential attracting other support: "I could use this as a jumping off point for
fundraising for this particular position.
It's almost like a match at that point."
• One recipient said: "It will be our second largest revenue stream for the year... about 15% more. So that's a sizable impact on our ability to cover the community."
• "Payroll is our biggest expense as a small newspaper," said a suburban non-profit publisher. "The credit is a lot of money to us. It will help pay our freelancers. We have a lot of requests for coverage that we are not able to respond to, but if we can expand our freelance team and get them out to more events, that will help our community."

Three cheers for Philip Glass, whose Solo Piano record has been my boon companion for decades whenever I'm painting. (I notice that Glass didn't use the current administration's name for the center in his letter.)
A letter from Philip Glass, with his name at the top. "After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my Symphony No. 15 "Lincoln" from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Symphony No. 15 is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and the values of the Kennedy Center today are in direct conflict with the message of the Symphony. Therefore, I feel an obligation to withdraw this Symphony premiere from the Kennedy Center under its current leadership. [signed] Philip Glass
