Kotaro Uchokoshi’s upcoming game was just cancelled. This guy made 999 and Danganronpa series. This industry is fucked. He decides to reveal the game now publicly and is looking for a publisher so pass it on. crashkeys.com

Each texel stores front depth, back depth, sky visibility and coverage. Front and back depth give the thickness of the crown along the ray, so a distant tree is intersected as a volume, not drawn as a flat sprite. About 63 MB per species with mips. #gamedev #indiedev #solodev

When Wario is flattened in Wario Land 3, a robot must remove the weight squashing him so that he can actually move. With a small setup, Wario can destroy the robot and still get squashed. With no one lifting the weight from him, Wario will remain flat and alone forever.

On some GPUs (eg GCN/RDNA) 24bit integer muls/mads are 4x faster than 32bit ones. 24bit instructions are not exposed in HLSL/GLSL but you can encourage the compiler to use the 24bit intrinsics by zeroing the 8 most significant bits, if the range allows it, for faster integer muls/mads.

Is there any reason NOT to use a (nearly) infinite clip plane in D3D? You can just pass something big like 2^80 as the far clip plane into the standard projection generator and it spits out basically the right thing. Odd that more people don't know about this. Is there a reason to avoid it?

Microsoft losing the plot to the extent that games running on Linux through a compatibility layer are now not only faster but *assumed to be faster* than games running natively on Windows should be an even bigger story than it already is
For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

I have a a half-written rant about how unit tests only find obvious easily-found bugs. The tricky bugs are always the ones where different systems meet. You need holistic end-to-end tests for those, designed to explore the nooks and crannies (and frequently guided by actual past bugs).

I LOVE this pic because it brilliantly shows off how Darius achieves its seamless widescreen effect via clever CRT monitor placement and mirrors [ image + alt text details from shmuplations.com/darius/ ]
A diagram showing how Darius achieves its seamless widescreen display via three CRT monitors. Two monitors are recessed in the cabinet and pointing up vertically on the left and right sides, and a monitor in the center faces the player as normal. Mirrors reflect the images of the left and right monitors at the player, creating the impression of a single widescreen display that is three monitors wide.

Donkey Kong 64 has a large number of collectibles, but the Internet is full of misinformation on what exactly that number is. I present an accurate count based on comprehensive datamining, aiming to answer this question once and for all: Donkey Kong 64 has 2142 collectibles.
The Number of Collectibles in Donkey Kong 64, Settled Once and for All
based on the datamining efforts of DK64 expert and DK64 Randomizer creator Ballaam
The Internet is full of misinformation about the number of collectibles in Donkey Kong 64. Various guides, articles, and even the Guinness Book of World Records all list wrong numbers due to either neglecting to count some type of collectible, or not considering that the coin and banana counters are not equivalent to the number of coin and banana collectibles; e.g. Banana Balloons add 10 bananas to the counter, and Rainbow Coins add 25 coins, while each only being a single item.
Note: a "collectible" is any individual item for which the collection status is saved to the save file, i.e. which does not respawn after collecting if the game is saved, exited and loaded again. This is as opposed to "pickups" like ammo that do respawn.
