Prices are rising faster than wages.
Line chart titled "Real wages (adjusted for inflation) are falling" showing percent change over the year in average hourly earnings for all private employees in 1982-1984 dollars. Real wages declined 0.18 percent in July 2026, a sharp reversal from consistent positive growth throughout 2024 and most of 2025. After peaking at 1.80 percent growth in March 2025, real wages turned negative in April 2026 and fell to negative 0.80 percent in May before partially recovering. This marks the first sustained period of declining purchasing power for workers since mid-2024, as wage gains have failed to keep pace with inflation.
