8 year old John Paul Macri's family was trying to get him into the experimental trial, but the funding changes delayed trials before he could even enroll.

Macri's cancer ended up spreading to his spine, making him ineligible for clinical trials. He can no longer walk, receives nutrition through a feeding tube, and is now in hospice care.

Only about 4% of federal cancer research funding goes toward childhood cancer, even though brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children.

The National Cancer institute says it is moving the consortium's trials to a larger network to speed up the development of new treatments. But researchers say the transition delayed this particular trial by at least a year. The trump administration says it is committed to advancing childhood cancer research, but the delay cost children time they could not afford to lose.
