So you'd have a personal allowance and thresholds that scale by hours worked? Because otherwise higher hours = higher brackets. Maybe not as bad as the £100k 60% marginal, but still.

Like there is no way this nonprofit could have paid for the number of hours I put into this just because I got stubborn and contrary! They are wrecking the most basic fundemental part of the internet I love: anyone can just make a little goofy website!

While I was struggling with protecting my mom's site from the bot swarm I kept asking everyone who is still in the industry how small sites who don't have a kid with a computer science degree survive and the answer was pretty much "they don't" and that's so grim

IME under the sort of workload pressures that jobs in that earnings range typically attract, working 4 days a week - for someone of either gender with young kids - is not silly avoidance, but a rational, even commendable, response to circumstances. There's more to life than work!

Yep. I've only known one other thing that brings out that worst side in people so rapidly and effectively; I won't say what it is, but there's a seven year jail term on it, and life behind bars for running a dealership.

In a crowd, an umbrella is just a way of making sure the rain that would have fallen on you falls on your neighbours.

4. Rain here comes with wind, meaning any umbrella under £100 has a half-life of days. I'm not spending £100 on a damn umbrella. 5. My preferred way to minimise rain exposure is to move quickly. Which I can't if everyone else on the pavement has guess what. 6. If I had one, I'd forget it anyway.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
As we join the great theoretical scientist, he is deep in thought. So still, quiet and focused that he might almost be asleep. But inside that brilliant mind, what new idea is forming? What certainty is being meticulously interrogated? What ingenious theory is ready to change our world forever? (the scientist snores lightly) Ah, it seems he actually is asleep. And that's fine. Science is hard and not every day can be a success. We will come back another time.

You haven't called for that. The point is that some people (some Israeli, some Jewish, some sympathetic towards them) understand "antiZionism" to mean "Israel shouldn't exist". And they do so because e.g. the Iranian regime and Hamas think exactly that. It's an understandable misunderstanding, ie.

Some understand Zionism to mean "the existence of the state of Israel" - that was its original meaning. And that's how some understand this motion. There are, after all, no shortage of actors on the world stage who would like Israel to not exist. So you can't blame people for hearing it that way.

My parents made this bird sculpture from various bits of wood and old metal they found in their shed and made a perch for it on the sawn-off trunk of a dead tree, and it makes for some great folk horror winter sunset photos.

It's not what a lot of Israelis or Jews want either. Apply it to us: Most want a state of England to exist. Most want it to be, in its own way, to a varying amount, English. Some want to be racist about it, but most don't. Even electing a racist party isn't a death penalty for the nation-state.

The way some people define Zionism is definitely racist. But - and I can’t stress this enough - it’s neither the only definition nor is it owned by everyone. And boy is the history of “a Jewish homeland” complicated. So a 300 character post simply won’t do. Nor will a Z=R or river to the sea slogan.

Broadly agree, it's about who is being persecuted in the here and now. Tbf, there may well be a whole lot of global Jewish communities to which that also applies. Not something that's on (my personal) current affairs radar, but it's been a problem forever so...

It's available, but we've been given ~zero motivation to do so. Weighed up against everything else going on in lives.. Greens tend to be People That Care, but that means we have a lots of things to Care About, some of which are likely to outrank Conference unless leaders impress upon us otherwise.

On consideration: it absolutely does. For the best, for low-stakes stuff, it's day-to-day muscle memory: "I'll know the rules, know just how to bend them, and be accountable if it blows up". POSIWID is kind of a cop-out, if accountability and justice matter. Your system, your purpose. Own it.

The good news here is, that particular hype train will be long since halted, derailed, on fire in bits in a ditch, by the time they actually get around to building anything. The bad news is, that might mean they don't get around to building anything. AGAIN.

I think we're within a few years of Democrats/liberals/leftists being forced to make a hard choice between coddling violent drivers in our cities -- blocking traffic enforcement, defending "free" parking, saying $75,000 cars are for the "working class" -- and realizing those are fascist positions.

All I know is, in most crafts where the rules are written down, the best practitioners, the ones who are celebrated and remembered: Know the rules. Respect the rules. Understand how, when, why to go beyond. I'm not sure if leadership works exactly that way, but feels like there's something there.

Rules codify power, but they are not power. Where the do-gooders are right: systems where the two are closely aligned are - in general - much, much better places to live than those where they are not. Denmark > Russia, say.

Final [over]thoughts on this. "Power" and "the Rules" are often understood - especially by progressive do-gooder types - to be the same thing. They are not. There's plenty of cases where people cannot, in fact, exercise power to the full envelope specified by the rules, and plenty the other way.

I'm not going to lay out specific actions here, but in situations where following the rules points toward a coward's ending, breaking them is always an option - if indeed you have the power you pretend to, and the ability to use it.

Emergency situations call for emergency powers. (Ask your friendly local 999 crew). Does that mean a price to pay when all's said and done? Of course, perhaps a very high one. But when the alternative is being slowly bled out, what's a leader to do?

But it's also where true accountability exists. "I will break the rules, and it's my judgement that in this situation it's better to do so, and be held accountable, than meekly follow the letter of the law to a bad outcome." Not a good attitude for everyday life - very much YOLO mode.
