"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Literally every older person I've ever talked to lucky enough to have a secure retirement has kept or planned to keep doing some kind of labor. Bc they like being helpful and don't want to be fucking bored. They just don't have to worry about losing their homes or healthcare.

If the baseline argument is young men are just unevolved gorillas, which is what the defense of those men boils down to, why aren't more men offended at being likened to animals. You're cool with that? You're SELF LABELING with that? Okay. Why are unevolved gorillas in charge and not in zoos.

I would probably reword this to say "They only *perform* correlation" and avoid using the word "understand" there. I was trying to distill the big concept of a statistical word probability calculator in a way that would meet most people where they are at.

Bennett @sleightedge.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In my experience, this approach comes off as pedantry and causes people to disregard what I'm saying. In contrast, meeting people where they are at is more effective

I like to refer to LLMs as "plausibility engines" -- just like con artists and crooked politicians, they depend upon believability rather than factual accuracy.

And you're fighting against peoples' intuition. They see LLMs get things right, and it's hard for them to think of that as a hallucination. Whereas "causation vs correlation" is a thing a lot of people have seen before while still being a more reasonable approximation of the truth than the bs hype
100
Bennett @sleightedge.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
this is ofc correct on a technical level, but my goal was to reduce that concept to something intuitive. most people don't think of all outputs of an LLM being hallucinations, they only think of the incorrect ones as being hallucinations
251
Bennett @sleightedge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The problem is even more fundamental. LLMs do not understand causation or logic. They only understand correlation. Which means, even with full token context, they will always have the chance to hallucinate.

I really don’t think that’s the case. I do think that probably these people hate femininity, which they see as weakness. But that doesn’t mean that they are secretly gay or trans. And I think that it does damage to insist that they are. Maybe some are, but definitely not all.

This month's @motherjones.com cover is astounding. Reposted with alt text:
Cover of the September-October issue of Mother Jones Magazine: a white background with the words "50 years of fearless journalism" in black print, centered above the name/logo of the magazine in large Bright Red. Below that in black, the words "the southern strategy — jim crow was dead and buried. Then came the Roberts court."

And then, framing those words, there are two sets of robes: to the left, the simple black robes of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government, as a Supreme Court Justice might wear; to the right, the white robes and hood of the KKK.

A white person's hand with cuff of business suit and shirt visible, reaches into the scene from the right, poised to grab the Klan robes.
