The attraction of the quiet and splendor of an infinite horizon with its quiet night skies and its horror as the wind begins its song? The fast, and even potentially slow, death wrought by the majestic terror of nature? Big mommy sea waves 'n step on my lungs with 22 ft waves mommy mommy pls

This was one of my favorites as a kid.
Far Side cartoon. A fish is upside down, rising tail first to the surface, its feet in white cubes. The caption explains: Embedded in Styrofoam "shoes," Carl is sent to "sleep with the humans."

One Woman’s Message From the Hell of ICE Detention
My husband, son, and I have been locked up for months—despite being permanent residents with no criminal record. It is an unendurable, unending nightmare.

EU games are a continuation of the CK games, but take the scale to nascent nation building and the age of imperialism instead of the noble family lines. They're all different styles of 4X games that will each earn over a thousand hours of game time.

Victoria III has better political simulations, better socio-economics. EU IV and V have better colonization and war mechanics. In short: Imperialism the Simulator vs My Workers Hate My Capitalists and The Capitalists Hate my Taxes.

They offer different experiences and similar depths. I really enjoyed both, but Victoria II and III is more of an economics and industrial revolution simulator; EU games are grow-and-conquer 4x games.

Both will take up hours upon hours of your time that you never knew you lost spending it trying to min-max your prosperity until it's too late. You look at the time and it's 2am, but you have a revolution to win.

I have strong memories of seeking out water as a dehydrated little person and getting unhappy that the water fountain was out of order (it had been out of order since Reagan).

Iran's 10-point plan, which President Trump agreed to, includes the complete removal of all sanctions imposed on Iran, but does not include a commitment to give up its nuclear stockpile or to completely halt uranium enrichment.

I am not a fan. Babadook is a physical manifestation of grief, of trauma; you push it away, it gets stronger. You integrate it, it no longer rules over you. Babadook doesn't deserve to be happy, it needs a therapist!

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

It’s such a laughably bad argument for the war on Iran to say “The people there want regime change.” I want regime change in the US, and I 100% do not want the US to be bombed. F off with garbage arguments.

Look, if I were a trained zooarchanogist/cryptozoologist I’d have a better answer for you, but as a layman I read a conjecture that it’s because Maggie likes their optimum scream-to-crunch ratio? A fifth grader is median approximately 70-100lbs of flesh and bone; optimal for an adult female Maggie.

Well that's the rub: she prefers them most of all, but will go for dogs and the occasional baby or five when the opportunity presents itself. You also gotta understand the need for blood and/or iron intake. Think of our light rail infrastructure!

Maggie, an obligate carnivore, has a caloric intake of between two to five 5th grade classes per week, depending on flight needs and whether she naps in between versus needing to stay vigilant against other would-be predators/suitors. The ecology can only handle so much Maggie!
