I wish people understood that TV writers: 1. *Have* actually thought more about this than even the most die hard fan. 2. Are beholden to time, money, and owner constraints that fans will never be aware of. 3. Are extremely likely to already be aware of any critiques because (see 1) but (see 2)

Melfina Outlaw Star truly has that shit on like nobody else. The stockings and pumps/big poncho cape combo with the starched collar and tie? Futuristic yet classic in silhouette. Classy and businesslike without being stuffy. Sultry but not overly sexual. Reminds people of Big Zam. Perfection.

US storyboading as a job is practically unrecognizable from what it was 30 years ago. There are a lot of reasons for this. A big one is that layout has been offshored (away from fussy creators) and or eliminated altogether (and departments before/after layout have to unfairly pick up that slack).

In other words, they're cowards who don't want to invest in anyone (and risk losing money), but want to ride on the coattails of people who do it by themselves. You already have to have money and clout on your own to be "allowed" in, but very few people will have access to that.

In other words, we're in need of another "New Hollywood" type era. In fact, we may see a downfall for film executives and oligarchs being in charge of film companies if things don't improve for the better.

Back in 2022, Alejandro Vidal Charris emailed me to say that a piece I wrote helped inspire him to write an article about a lost film called Roy del espacio. It may be my favourite bit of feedback I've ever recieved. Beyond delighted to see what Alejandro's work has led to. Cannot wait to see this!

Thinking about that Miyazaki quote about creators of anime nowadays being primarily people who just watch anime and not getting external influences outside of anime in comparison to Uematsu growing up deeply on prog, psychedelic, and electronic music.

Finally completed my Cowboy Bebop illustration! Quite the challenge drawing all five of the crew but I hope I did them justice 🫶 Getting the balance on everyone was tricky!

The movies would've likely still been successful, as even Michael Bay TMNT was successful (Out of the Shadows broke even, but didn't make back its budget), but nowhere to the degree that the Sonic movies are now. Especially if they had Tails, Knuckles, or Shadow look similar to this

Been laughing at the dub delivery of Jiji's line in episode 12 of Dan Da Dan ("I wiiin") because I had long been saying "I win" in a really similar way, & I couldn't remember why. But then Josh reminded me, "Oh, you've just been morphing it from that line in that old Tomorrow's Nobodies episode."

This is another thing that will always be very important to keep in our heads. Everyone involved who fought as hard as they did to get the rep out there and to do it justice deserve to be praised and named, regardless if the people above them allow it on screen in the end.

Tonight's studies: Seiko Ayase!!! #dandadan

Three studies from the anime Dandadan. Seiko has a tall beehive haircut, swept bangs, hoop earrings, and half rim eyeglasses. There are so many cigarettes in the image. In one sketch, Seiko stands with her back towards the viewer, wearing shorts, sandals, and a jacket with a cat on the back. She rests her baseball bat on her shoulder. In the middle is a bust of her looking down, her lip curled in disgust or annoyance at something. In the third sketch she is seen at 3/4 view. Around her are 3 different arms in positions around her, massaging her temple or casually holding cigarettes. A possessed cat figurine hangs off her shoulder, with her mouth stuffed with cigarettes and blowing smoke cartoonishly.

A closeup of the third sketch showing Seiko's annoyance and the ridiculous cigarette cat.

Why own changing "Win or Lose" but not own the "Moon Girl" decision? If you make these decisions you have to face the consequences of these decisions. Companies do not decide to withhold one expensively animated episode of a show for no reason. Please don't insult our intelligence.

I understand companies make business decisions & sometimes those decisions will be unpopular, but you have to own those decisions. What other reason would Disney have to pull a fully animated "Moon Girl" episode featuring a trans character other than the content? There is no other reason.
