This one has been a long time coming! I'm happy to share that another chapter of my PhD has been published! In this one, I'm shaking up the taxonomy of North American metoposaurids. This work was largely done in museum collections, and more on that below. peerj.com/articles/217...
A figure with maps showing the distribution of metoposaurid occurrences in Upper Triassic outcrops of western and eastern North America (centered on the USA). The approximate chronostratigraphic ranges of the now five recognized species are plotted, and line drawings of all of the potentially or definitively diagnostic holotypes of North American metoposaurids are included.

Don't post a ton of #paleontology stuff here, but @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social new interactive, size-comparison page is fun! Allows you to see how insanely big sauropods got. Here's a few next to the biggest known #Tyrannosaurusrex "Scotty" & a couple o humans. #Argentinosaurus is just nuts.

I love this! Thank you so much. Here is my contribution: Blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus. Fun fact: I was on a c 50-60’ research vessel, on a glassy Pacific day, and a blue whale swam directly under us! Tail visible out beyond the stern. Head visible out beyond the bow. Talk about AWE! 🐋

This was a lot of fun!
The outlines of two animals, one is a buffalo and the other is a scary looking dinosaur called Utah raptor ostrommaysi with sharp claws and walking on two legs. The Utah raptor is a little smaller than the bison but 1.3x longer because of the tail. Two animals, a mammoth and a triceratops prorsus. The text says the triceratops is 1.1x longer than the mammoth but they are around the same size overall. The mammoth is much taller thoNow there is a t rex next to a mammoth, bison, Utah raptor, and two people(an adult and a child). The t rex and the mammoth have heads around the same height, and the bison and the Utah raptor have heads around the same height as the people's. The t rex is 3.8x the length of the bison Now there are three very large long necked dinosaurs next to the t rex and a mammoth which look small in comparison. It says the argentinosaurus huinculensis is 6x the length of mammuthus primigenius

Physicist & chemist Marie Curie was the: + First woman to win a Nobel Prize + First person & only woman to win twice + Only person to ever win a Nobel Prize in 2 different sciences: Physics (1903) & Chemistry (1911) Marie Skłodowska Curie died #OTD in 1934. #WomenInSTEM
A striking black-and-white studio portrait of Marie Curie (1867–1934), the legendary Polish-French physicist and chemist who revolutionized modern science by discovering radioactivity, polonium, and radium. As the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, her profound historical significance is reflected in her serious, deeply introspective expression. Photographed from the chest up, she looks directly at the camera with an intense, analytical gaze. Her graying hair is styled in a soft updo, framing a face etched with a look of quiet resolve and intellectual focus. She wears a dark, textured jacket over a shirt adorned with a distinctive geometric, black-and-white checkered pattern at the neckline. The portrait utilizes a stark, dark, textured background that blends into her clothing, creating a high-contrast composition that draws complete focus to her face. The overall mood is solemn, dignified, and powerful, capturing the essence of a brilliant academic pioneer who dedicated her life to scientific discovery.

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social's Tyrannosaurus, @triloboii.bsky.social's Repenomanus, Alex Ebel's Triceratops, and Christopher Wormell's Allosaurus!
A Tyrannosaurus with a blotchy red, brown, and cream pattern charges across a dusty plain, looking back over its shoulder with open jaws.Repenomamus, a badger-like mammal, sits with splayed legs and limply held arms. It's fur is a mix of coffee tones, with pink bare skin on the soles, inner ear, and nose.A portrait of Triceratops, restored with a leathery brown skin and smooth keratinous sheathes over the horns and beak. It has cat-like eyes with slit pupils, giving it an almost predatory intensity.A purple and yellow countershaded Allosaurus with a rough-scaled hide and blunt, rounded snout stands atop a bare rocky hill. A tiny silhouetted theropod watches it nervously.

And this, dear reader, is why we use references. The top illustration was done some time ago, largely from memory. A museum wanted to licence it, but I insisted on reworking it first, to make it more accurate and appropriate for an educational setting. The difference is kinda dramatic! 😳
Two illustrations of a Tyrannosaurus rex on a white background. The first is significantly shorter and heavier than the second, which was produced with close reference to accurate skeletal drawings. Both have drab grey/brown bodies with striped tails, and prominent red colouration to the neck and head.
