This one has been a long time coming! I'm happy to share that another chapter of my PhD has been published! In this one, I'm shaking up the taxonomy of North American metoposaurids. This work was largely done in museum collections, and more on that below. peerj.com/articles/217...
A figure with maps showing the distribution of metoposaurid occurrences in Upper Triassic outcrops of western and eastern North America (centered on the USA). The approximate chronostratigraphic ranges of the now five recognized species are plotted, and line drawings of all of the potentially or definitively diagnostic holotypes of North American metoposaurids are included.

Comic. [Person with long hair pointing to diagram with Tyrannosaurus Rex standing next to a person.] PERSON: We now believe the primary prey of Tyrannosaurus Rex was these humans who kept standing next to it for scale.

Don't post a ton of #paleontology stuff here, but @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social new interactive, size-comparison page is fun! Allows you to see how insanely big sauropods got. Here's a few next to the biggest known #Tyrannosaurusrex "Scotty" & a couple o humans. #Argentinosaurus is just nuts.

I love this! Thank you so much. Here is my contribution: Blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus. Fun fact: I was on a c 50-60’ research vessel, on a glassy Pacific day, and a blue whale swam directly under us! Tail visible out beyond the stern. Head visible out beyond the bow. Talk about AWE! 🐋

I've seen books with such comparisons. It makes sense to eventually offer some other options to compare them too.

I'd like to add all of these, but they'll hate to wait until I do skeletals of them.

It's not an error, 3.4 meters is along the curve of the back. So in a straight line along the ground it's shorter.

I will definitely add more, every time I do a new skeletal. But it's not a fast process.

This was a lot of fun!
The outlines of two animals, one is a buffalo and the other is a scary looking dinosaur called Utah raptor ostrommaysi with sharp claws and walking on two legs. The Utah raptor is a little smaller than the bison but 1.3x longer because of the tail. Two animals, a mammoth and a triceratops prorsus. The text says the triceratops is 1.1x longer than the mammoth but they are around the same size overall. The mammoth is much taller thoNow there is a t rex next to a mammoth, bison, Utah raptor, and two people(an adult and a child). The t rex and the mammoth have heads around the same height, and the bison and the Utah raptor have heads around the same height as the people's. The t rex is 3.8x the length of the bison Now there are three very large long necked dinosaurs next to the t rex and a mammoth which look small in comparison. It says the argentinosaurus huinculensis is 6x the length of mammuthus primigenius

The search auto-suggests names if you can remember part of a name, so hopefully that helps? You can also browse the galleries first, they are arranged by type of animals.

Playing around with @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social 's new feature, and, well, let's say that I can see Spinosaurus' diet easily incorporating semiaquatic reptiles, as even the upper end of the size range of both crocs and turtles looks like within food range.

They have Jane being 20 cm longer than the NCSM specimen. I do find Jane being taller, but essentially the same length. I also find both to be a bit longer than their published estimates. I followed the same protocols I use with other skeletals, but if I need to update them at some point I will.

Dr. Scott Hartman - but not THAT kind of doctor @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I've been asked this a few times, but the Jane material is based on the scanned data from Hutchinson, et al. (2011) and N. lancensis is based on the measurements in Zanno & Napoli (2025). Of course Jane is still growing, so she'd definitely be larger if allowed to reach full size.

Physicist & chemist Marie Curie was the: + First woman to win a Nobel Prize + First person & only woman to win twice + Only person to ever win a Nobel Prize in 2 different sciences: Physics (1903) & Chemistry (1911) Marie Skłodowska Curie died #OTD in 1934. #WomenInSTEM
A striking black-and-white studio portrait of Marie Curie (1867–1934), the legendary Polish-French physicist and chemist who revolutionized modern science by discovering radioactivity, polonium, and radium. As the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, her profound historical significance is reflected in her serious, deeply introspective expression. Photographed from the chest up, she looks directly at the camera with an intense, analytical gaze. Her graying hair is styled in a soft updo, framing a face etched with a look of quiet resolve and intellectual focus. She wears a dark, textured jacket over a shirt adorned with a distinctive geometric, black-and-white checkered pattern at the neckline. The portrait utilizes a stark, dark, textured background that blends into her clothing, creating a high-contrast composition that draws complete focus to her face. The overall mood is solemn, dignified, and powerful, capturing the essence of a brilliant academic pioneer who dedicated her life to scientific discovery.

Honestly, as loathe as I am to toss out sexual selection as a catch-all answer for unknown function, this sort of variation does smack of being a secondary sexual characteristic.
