the recent jwst images have been insane
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust.

Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Processing: Alyssa Pagan.A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the center. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's center; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in color; bright, nearby stars are the same color.A star-forming region. The left two thirds of the image is blanketed in thick clouds of green and yellow gas and dust that form swirling patterns. Some of the gas is spread into thin, thready wisps. The right third of the image is the black background speckled with stars and multi-colored dots that represent distant galaxies. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the center of the scene. Each is crowned with six long spikes and two shorter spikes created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors.
A region of space filled with bright stars and clouds of gas. In the center, the densest clouds form the shape of a chest with its lid open. The chest appears to glow from within. At its base it breaks apart into long pillars of thick gas. Many of the gas clouds in the background are dark orange globules, while others form large, pale hazes. A few brightly shining stars lie in the foreground, the biggest and brightest in front of the chest’s lid.

Or at least marginally less so. Eventually it becomes about what the empirical evidence suggests. The higher the spec of the machine to simulate us becomes, the less likely it becomes.

Sure but now you‘ve increased the bar to a simulator being in a higher dimensional space with very different laws of physics so they don‘t need to use a black hole to handle the lowest rez version of our shared experience. That is less plausible than just this being a physical universe.

The US just has such massive well…geopolitical mass, that it has a gravity all of its own. Anytime we do anything there are a ton of knock-on effects. Also Spain finds itself in the eyes of a lot of powers, not just those mentioned in this thread.

Israel is supposedly capable of anything…except apparently toppling its remarkably dysfunctional regional neighbors with whom its had security beefs for generations. Meanwhile European colonialism of Africa? Never heard of it.

Anyway I will take it 10 out of 10 times over DC. One because it’s not a literal swamp. Two because it’s shaped like an airplane.

Is the whole thing a highway? No not technically. It wouldn’t be the Most American City Ever if there wasn’t a perfunctory subway mapa-metro.com/mapas/Brasil...

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

Special shout out to Portuguese, which is actually comprehensible to an English native speaker. The sounds sound like the letters! The pacing and rhythm is close enough for me to not look like a total asshole when people talk to me.

1950s monumental modern architecture, ambitious utopian Corbusier-inspired landscapes, a conquest of the natural landscape by the will of the people of a state amidst transformation, air conditioning wherever you go…. Oh and the whole thing is a multi-lane highway for reasons.

Sadly Trade Adjustment Assistance was pretty well-studied I think. In fairness to TAA, the places affected tended to be relatively narrow suburban industrial markets with high rates of homeownership so there was a fair bit of lock-in

I think they change quantization depending on time of day. Also new default effort is medium, while max effort sometimes has a paperclip maximizing effect.

The thing about blockading Hormuz is that it is the logical conventional escalation option vs. running a massive bombing campaign or attempting amphibious invasions, to the point where I’m surprised they didn’t do it first week of March.

$AAPL great take on the new MacBook Neo, and how PC makers ignore it at their peril ie 8GB RAM is zippier on this machine running MacOS (not iPadOS) so they can keep costs down

Since 1y BEI @ 5% chart is doing the rounds, a not of caution: short-term TIPS are *extremely* illiquid. To price breakeven inflation you match nominal UST with TIPS, which gives you an inflation "price". But if one leg of that is super illiquid....well you got some issues.
