Two examples why C16 herbals are not reliable evidence for contemporary available colour variations in flora or fauna. Herbals were sold unpainted & owners encouraged to add colour themselves. In this case yellow (gelb) became orange & the sheep received a blueish tint. Kreuterbuch, Lonincer, 1582.

This is so disappointing to see academics conclude "yes, it's a fascist tool" and then in the same breath say "let's use it to show students how it's flawed" or "let's collect more data on it by giving it more of our data"... Excuse me?

In 1654-55 a visitation was conducted at the Grand Beguinage of Mechelen. Dozens of Beguines were interviewed. The biggest complaint: too many (boarding and day school) children at the Beguinage! They made noise and filled up the church so that some Beguines couldn't attend services.
