Wow! Major new site discovered on Lismore, in the inner Hebrides. “The most exciting moment for me was when they were doing the post-excavation analysis and they found that they had been melting gold, copper, silver, and they were making jewellery on our little island in the seventh century.”

An amazing glimpse into Mesolithic everyday life: this more than 7,500-year-old ring was made from heather roots, carefully rolled up and prepared for later use. It was discovered at the settlement of Motala/Sweden, where the same material was used for fish traps. Dating 5750–5550 BC. 🧵1/2 📷me

A 2,300-year-old silver container in the shape of a scallop-shell decorated with an octopus 🐙 It may once have held cosmetics. From Paternò, Sicily. Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a silver shell-shaped container with an eight-armed octopus in relief at the centre of the lid. The arms of the octopus curl outwards across the ridges of the shell’s surface. This ornate shell container has a hinged lid and may once have been a cosmetic container . It is displayed on a clear stand in a museum case. Dimensions: 13.3 × 13.2 × 3 cm. It is part of the Silver Treasure from Paternò, Sicily, a hoard discovered in 1909, consisting of tableware and toiletries. Dated 4th-3rd century BC.

it’s #ToothyTuesday! 🦷✨ crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophaga) postcanine teeth are, imo, among the most beautiful the wavy, curved cusps on these premolars & molars reflect their function in filter-feeding krill (= marine crustaceans, thus “crabeater”)
This image depicts the anterior skull of a crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophaga) in lateral left view, bearing postcanine teeth with curved cusps, which are used for filtering krill, tiny marine crustaceans (hence, “crabeater”). The largest cusp is the 2nd-3rd most mesial cusp, with 1-2 smaller cusps mesially and 2-3 smaller cusps distally. The largest cusp is especially curved, curving distally. Cusps are fairly blunt (i.e., not sharp), reflecting their use in filter-feeding. In addition to the postcanines, unicuspid incisors and canines are present. Grokipedia defines race by genetics, and also states that population-scale differences in IQ and crime rates are genetically caused. Comparing the Wikipedia and Grokipedia case study pages, genetics terms are more prominent on Grokipedia, and the citations are often total nonsense (see alt text).
A screenshot from the Grokipedia page "Black people". The first sentence defines black people as a genetic cluster, citing Rosenberg et al., 2005 (https://journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgen.0010070). The Rosenberg paper does not state this at any point.

The last sentence states "Black populations have produced notable figures in civil rights, athletics, and entertainment, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, while facing documented group-level disparities in socioeconomic outcomes, health, and crime rates across diaspora communities, which empirical studies link to a interplay of genetic, cultural, and institutional causal factors amid debates over environmental versus heritable influences.[7]".
