On reflection, I think the lasting impact of 9/11 for me came from witnessing the Islamophobia, xenophobia, and racism that we allowed to enslave us. I was an older teen. Abu Ghraib made me realize that I could never be loyal to an idea of America again: that Abu Ghraib was what patriotism led to.

I obviously adore Dolly…and also lots of people adored Jean Vanier and Cesar Chavez and were pushing for their inclusion on the sanctoral calendar. Waiting 50 yrs is prudent imo. But just bc somebody isn’t on the calendar doesn’t mean they can’t be kept as saints by individuals/local communities.

I've seen the depressing reading statistics, and I've seen the depressing gambling statistics, but I had not seen them side by side like this before. Woof.

A study analyzing 236,000 responses to the American Time Use Survey found that the proportion of Americans who read for pleasure on any given day fell from 28 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2023. (The study looked at people who had read a book, magazine, or newspaper; listened to an audiobook; or read an e-book.) Gambling has become a more common leisure activity than reading a book: Last year, 57 percent of Americans placed a bet.

The priest must then "write by hand a letter to the Holy Father in which he presents himself and asks for the remission of the censures incurred because of the ordination he received from an excommunicated or irregular Bishop, or because, having been validly and legitimately ordained, he subsequently became a member of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X."

One reason I hate death penalty cases is that capital punishment is incredibly stupid and irrational. It's cruel, expensive, and serves no deterrent effect. It's rarely imposed, except against a tiny minority of unlucky defendants—and in those cases, racism almost always plays a role. Just end it.
