Fun fact about Catholic doctrine on the death penalty, there's no carveout for "what if the guy was really bad"

I'm really trying to give folks the benefit of the doubt here, but there are enough studies out showing the detriment of AI usage on intellect, on the environment, and on interpersonal communication that it just irritates me to no end to see the capitulation of TEC to AI use.

AC parishes have, more than anything, a slam-dunk opportunity for evangelism by refusing to use AI and emphasizing the dignity of human labor + the beauty of things made by human hands. This capitulation to the labor stealing machine is just baffling to me.

Church of the Advent, Boston just posted an AI-generated poster for their upcoming formation program. This now marks two shrine AC parishes in the Boston area that are using AI in marketing. (And that's not even mentioning the SCP conference last week.)

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

No, it’s no big deal! There’s a super interesting range of catholicity among the AC parishes ranging from ‘TLM in English’ (Clem’s) to ‘18th century baroque’ (Iggys) to ‘Vatican II but east facing’ (St Mary’s). All of it is beautiful, and it all makes us stronger as Episcopalians

I feel this in my gut, especially since I just got married. Things are already tight at this parish, and now suddenly my insurance is like 10k more expensive.

They’re a very solid rite II prayer book catholic parish. If you want someplace extremely nosebleed high, I’d check out S Clement’s, Philly (English Missal) or St. Ignatius of Antioch in NYC (Prayer book with Latin chanted propers, humeral veil, and medieval/renaissance mass settings)

This will all be solved when the SCLM provides us with a modern language Rite I use and we can return to the American Canon ;)

The YDS chapel switched to online leaflets when I was a student, and I just stopped going. I spend so much time every day on my phone, I don’t want to approach the throne of grace while having my nose in my phone

Encouraging people, again and again, to do the hard right thing when there is often no reward, and sometimes even cost, is unbelievably exhausting. It is always tempting to take the easy win, to look good rather than do good. There are so many rewards there.

On reflection, I think the lasting impact of 9/11 for me came from witnessing the Islamophobia, xenophobia, and racism that we allowed to enslave us. I was an older teen. Abu Ghraib made me realize that I could never be loyal to an idea of America again: that Abu Ghraib was what patriotism led to.

I generally don’t go Times Square when I’m in New York (I learned long ago it’s just a gross display of American Capitalism), but I made a rare exception today for a lovely 9/11 requiem at St. Mary the Virgin

It’s super ironic that for the “Season of Creation” we are wiping out whole forests to print massive service leaflets with bespoke liturgies. Want to honor creation? Just use the BCP. 📕

My wheelhouse is theology, not bibical studies, unfortunately. I'd probably just end up googling it myself, to be honest.

I don't know where you can get a copy of it (maybe email them?) but St. Mark's, Philadelphia's profile was illustrated to include little caricatures of parishoners, and it was so very endearing.

The lit candle indicates the presence of the sacrament, so it shouldn't be lit when there isn't any in reserve.

I obviously adore Dolly…and also lots of people adored Jean Vanier and Cesar Chavez and were pushing for their inclusion on the sanctoral calendar. Waiting 50 yrs is prudent imo. But just bc somebody isn’t on the calendar doesn’t mean they can’t be kept as saints by individuals/local communities.

I am theologically committed to a preferential option for the poor, so I very much affirm the centering of the ways the Meta glasses can harm children and I also, as an adult woman, do not want to be subjected to constant recorded surveillance. I do not want to be fodder for someone's Content.

By the specificity I mean like his emphasis on Jesus as Jewish, as Palestinian, as being Mary's baby, etc. etc. etc.

sam @sjchristopher.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
For a long time I was using Child as the term for the second person of the Trinity, but I feel like I heard one too many Willie Jennings lectures about the specificity of Jesus' incarnational reality at YDS to gender Jesus as anything but male. I'm all here for she/her-ing the spirit, though.

If I'm going to do gender neutral, I like Parent, Son, and Holy Spirit

sam @sjchristopher.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I worry that this erases the divinity of the second person of the Trinity (and also seems to make an argument that there's both a father and a mother, or that the Spirit is the only one that's fully God).

I've personally been swayed by @frutledge.bsky.social's take that things like 'Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer' fail because the language is supposed to describe the Trinity in both its immanent and economic senses. Ignoring the fact that CRS is modalist, it doesn't describe how God relates to godself
