Thinking about the movie RRR and I feel we need an Irish version. Completely over the top, ahistorical story of Irish independence. James Connolly battering Lloyd George with nunchucks. Michael Collins taking out 200 black & tans barehanded. Dev defeating Monty in a dance-off. Let’s do this.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Ireland, like most countries, punishes women financially for having children, does not value care work or pay for it appropriately, and has an economy that depends on the unpaid care work of women. We are fundamentally unprepared for an aging population with fewer young folks around.

for relatively weak short term gains they weren't even slightly good at cynically capitalising on! Local Link should have made huge inroads for the Greens in rural Ireland, but they didn't aggressively frame it as their policy. now they're out, rollout of Local Link has slowed to a crawl

The amount of working artists I've spoken to who are losing or have lost the ability to make a viable career out of it due largely to people's use of genAI instead of hiring artists is genuinely so upsetting. We won't know what we've lost until it's gone.

Discomfort is an essential part of growth and wouldn’t it be so embarrassing to be the exact same person thirty years from now, in a totally different world, because you were so averse to discomfort?

Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue

Increasing my discomfort tolerance has also been one of the greatest assets to improving my mental health.

You Call Yourself a Film Critic @filmcriticmaybe.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I will always-and I truly mean always-share this story the Rubberbandits shared about a competition held in Cork to see a classic movie screened by him (which sounds like they're offering water boarding as a prize) and this was the recounting
Facebook message from an unknown male: "George Hook, on Newstalk, used to do a monthly competition to "Win tickets to see a Classic Film with George Hook'. Which to my friend, Patrick, was the worst prize he'd ever heard of. So, naturally he entered the competition and ended up winning 3 tickets to the Gate to see Taxi Driver on, like, a Wednesday at 7. Dreadful. We went along and found a handful of people in the first few rows. But no George. 5-10 minutes go by. We hear, 'Are you all ready for a Classic film?'. George Hook was hiding up in the back. In the dark. No reason for it. He comes down and proceeds to make a speech about Taxi Driver for 20 minutes. Most of which was inaccurate. He had this whole segment he repeated ad infinitum about it being 'Scorsese's first picture' which it wasn't, and 'De Niro helping him kick his heroin habit to get it made' (cocaine, and he was thinking of Raging Bull). All inaccurate, rambling nonsense. He talked all the way through the film, laughing at scenes that weren't remotely funny or even meant to be funny, irritated everyone with his bizarre guttural noises and may have even fallen asleep. Film ends. Lights go up. Everyone leaves. Not a word said. He just disappears into the night. --- And you boys think you know Performance Art?"

Will now be referring to Count Binface as The Provisional Lord Buckethead
The fictional character of Lord Buckethead was created by the American filmmaker Todd Durham for his 1984 science fiction film Hyperspace. Mike Lee, the owner of the video distributor that released Hyperspace in the UK, stood as Lord Buckethead in the 1987 UK general election and again in the 1992 general election. The character went unused until the comedian Jonathan Harvey stood as Lord Buckethead in the 2017 general election. His televised appearance standing next to prime minister Theresa May went viral, drawing media coverage and an online following.

Following the 2017 election, Durham asserted his ownership of the Lord Buckethead character and displaced Harvey. With Durham's authorisation, Lord Buckethead returned in 2019, now played by David Hughes. He appeared at People's Vote rallies calling for a second Brexit referendum and stood in the 2019 general election representing the Monster Raving Loony Party. Harvey continues to campaign using his own character, Count Binface.

Ex Pearl Jam drummer David Abbruzzese on Elon Musk and the gutting of USAID. "Fascism survives by turning corpses into math. It sells death as tradeoffs, budget lines, acceptable loss. People who would never step over a dying child on a sidewalk will vote for that spreadsheet every two years."
Elon Musk dared people to name a single person who died because he gutted USAID. Nicholas Kristof answered with names: children, ages, villages, even a five-month-old baby. He dragged the dead out of spreadsheet fog and back into the room. Musk responded with a profanity-laced tantrum, furious that the bodies refused to stay offstage.

Fascism survives by turning corpses into math. It sells death as tradeoffs, budget lines, acceptable loss. People who would never step over a dying child on a sidewalk will vote for that spreadsheet every two years. The spell breaks when the dead arrive one by one with names and faces, so the strongman does the cheapest thing he has. He attacks the witness.

If these estimates hold, Elon Musk helped push millions of human beings, including children, into the kill zone. This is mass death on a historic scale. It belongs in history books beside some of the most repulsive names mankind has produced. Of course he cannot handle names. Names carry funerals, villages, children, and the full human weight of what he did. They pin the crime to the body."
