Why do you hear so much repetition in the media about Trump's promise to give voters $5000 in a way you didn't for say, Kamala Harris's plan to give people who start a business $50,000? Is it because Trump has more credibility because he's told the truth in the past? What could be the other reason?

I purchased this despondent duck lamp for my desk and was notified today that my “baby item” had arrived and I cannot get over the idea of someone using this in a baby’s room. Like “welcome to your depressing life little baby, it only gets worse from here.”
The semi viral laying duck lamp. It’s a glowing really depressed looking duck splayed out on a desk.

I'm sure it was a little uncomfortable for Socrates to eat poison. But the bitterness of hemlock is nothing compared to the bitterness from having to admit you might have benefitted from racial privilege

It probably was a bit awkward for Newton to carefully hide his beliefs about the Catholic Trinity for fear of being prosecuted for heresy. But that is nothing compared to getting a bad teaching evaluation once because a student disagree with your take on capitalism

Sure, Alan Turing was driven to suicide because homosexuality was a crime in the UK. But I'll bet he's glad he never had to admit that there might have been something bad about colonialism

Yeah, the Jesuits banned whole parts of mathematics because they thought they were evil, but at least they never had a student ask about disability accommodations

Academia was so much better before Woke. Sure, David Hume was never able to secure an academic job because he might have been an atheist. But at least no one made him use the singular "they"

It’s bad enough that it tries to flatter you by telling you you’re asking such good and insightful questions. But desperately egging you on to try to make you spend more tokens is just gross. Like if every time you ran a mass spectrometer it tried to upsell you on some more advanced analysis.

I’ve seen a lot of my colleagues’ interactions with Claude working on research problems & it would be easier for me to accept it as a serious scientific tool if it didn’t end every single response with the LLM equivalent of “you want fries with that?” — constantly trying to goad you into asking more
