What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Great piece on the efforts to reduce action on climate change. One of the arguments I find the most frustrating is those pointing out the small % of global emissions we account for - if everyone in a small or medium country thought like this, a huge proportion of the world would just do nothing.

Great to see this published. Last year we (UKHSA) launched sentinel surveillance of C. difficile using WGS. The idea was to select sentinel trusts that would be most likely to detect the emergence of subtypes. This paper describes the identification of the set of NHS trusts. doi.org/10.1038/s414...

Britain is more than halfway towards reaching Net Zero. Most people don't realise this, not least as the fossil-fuel fanatics want us to think achieving it is impossible. Via YouGov

**UK public support net zero, but underestimate UK achievement to date**

"Thinking about the government's target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, how much progress, if any, do you think the UK has made towards achieving this target?"

**Long way / less than halfway** — 50%

**Don't know** — 28%

**Most of the way / More than halfway** — 8%

*All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,040 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 17th - 18th June 2026. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+)*
