Interestingly, the increasing rates don't have appear to have been driven by any particular ribotype of C. diff, which contrasts with the early 2000s, where ribotype 027 was predominant. That's all I've got for today. There's loads more in each of the reports so do have a read. #hcai

The age trends for C. diff are fascinating. It's mostly a disease of the elderly, but the younger age groups have shown increasing rates of infection too.

On to #cdiff, and it looks like the increase in incidence of recent years may have changed. Hopefully, this will continue into next year too. www.gov.uk/government/s...

Even more worrying is that this increase seems to be strongest among the younger age groups. It will be important to figure out what's going on there. Also in the report is data on the source of infection. This has shown a decline in infections with a catheter or line source and

I'm going to skip over the P. aeruginosa data (sorry P. aeruginosa fans) and go to #mrsa. Here, there's a massive success story in the reduction of rates over time. However, there's a somewhat worrying uptick in recent years, for both hospital onset and community onset cases.

The trends by ethnicity for E. coli bacteraemia contrast strongly with those for Klebsiella bacteraemia where rates are highest, and rising sharply, among the Black population.

Trends by ethnicity are fascinating with flat-ish trends for the White population, but highest among Asian and rising for all non-White ethnicities. On a methodological note it's interesting to see how important standardisation by age and sex is here.

Also interesting are the age-sex trends - the 1 to 14 age group really stands out here for low and declining trends. Given that E. coli bacteraemia commonly has a urinary focus, it's not surprising that rates are highest among women in the 15-44 age group. Also interesting is that it looks like

This year's commentary on bacteraemia and C. difficile infection is out now. Loads of interesting stuff in it as usual. The report itself has been split into two now with bacteraemias and CDI reported separately. E. coli first - it continues it's upward trend www.gov.uk/government/s...

A photo of jagged rocks and low cloud and not a lot else. It's a colour photo but it might as well be monochrome as everything is grey in the picture.

This rise isn't down to increased testing as the test positivity has remained stable as rates of c diff have risen. It also looks like it's not down to expansion of a new ribotype as no particular ribotype is increasing in the ribotyping data (see report, fig10) So, what is driving the rise?
