So how long will it take the DC blob complex to accept: - US lost with Iran - Iran still sucks - The only way to pay them less is to use less oil and LNG from them AND - Build diversion pipelines etc ?? This is hard because green left hates all pipelines, and blob takes a lot of oil money.

Yes, bond markets are a constraint upon a leftist government - but maybe not the biggest one.

I agree that there is a serious conversation to be had about the institutional preference for achieving social goals in ways that don’t have a direct budgetary cost, even if the true costs are higher, and the benefits less, than with direct public spending.

Difficult to overstate how misleading this is. Any % tax on capital gains (sale price less purchase price) will by mathematical construction result in differing rates relative to sale price. Including the existing regime! That’s not a “profound oversight”, that’s what CGT *is*.

It also occurred to me that the worked example in the piece ignores large CGT concessions for active small businesses, such as the 50% active asset reduction. These substantially reduce real world CGT. The piece confounds more than it enlightens.

Labor’s tax policies will improve intergenerational equity and ensure more equal tax treatment of income from labour and capital.

Chalmers asked if Australia will ever trust a Labor promise again
Nick Newling
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has been asked whether Australians can ever trust a promise made by the government again, after breaking the key election promise of not making any changes to the capital gains tax discount or negative gearing.
"I've taken responsibility for the fact that the government has a different view now than it had 12 months ago. I've taken, I do take responsibility for that, and that's because I've come to a different view on these policy changes. I'm explaining why. But more important than any of that, let's not lose sight of the actual issue that we are addressing here," Chalmers told the ABC.

This headline is a disgusting lie Special Disability Trusts are not affected *AT ALL* The article even makes it clear the concerns of the bloke (a solicitor with expertise in wills and estates) in this story are not about his disabled son but his other children being able to minimize their tax!
Headlined from The Australian

Families of disabled children forced to overhaul finances under new Labor tax reformstext of story:

The first trust is a special disability trust, which will be largely unaffected by tax reforms in Labor’s controversial federal budget.

While it has some “limitations” as to how it can be spent, this trust will allow a few trusted people to access enough funds to see Henry properly cared for.

The second is a discretionary testamentary trust, which would be taxed at Labor’s new 30 per cent minimum if it was being established in the future.

Mr Latham told The Australian the initial appeal of a testamentary trust was its flexibility. “What that (trust) was intended to do was provide a pool of funds as a contingency for my son with a disability. But there’s also a broader range of beneficiaries, which includes my other children, so if Henry’s needs were met, there would be flexibility for the trustees to apply the funds more broadly to other beneficiaries,” he said.

Who among us did not have a $50,000 share portfolio when we were 20yo? The Oz finds a typical young person.
Story in The Australian

Anthony Kolmac should be the young voter Jim Chalmers won over with a budget pitched at scaling back booming wealth held by older Australians.

Instead, he says younger people will be hit with higher rents while facing much more significant hits to their ability to generate enough wealth to enter the housing market.

The 20-year-old, who has built a $50,000 share portfolio to help fund his first home, said the overhaul of capital gains tax and negative gearing blindsided those trying to enter the property market. “It will significantly hinder my ability to create wealth as it will ultimately delay the process (to save for a deposit) significantly,” Mr Kolmac said. “I will have to save even more money to be able to afford what I would have once been able to afford a lot earlier.”

Excellent demolition of “affordable housing”. It’s a muddled no man’s land between market and social housing, achieving the goals of neither. It functions as a modest benefit to a tiny fraction of middle class families. It’s costly, inefficient and impedes geographic and occupational mobility.

This is definitely worth paying attention to. But we should keep in mind that what matters for bond markets is *not* inflation as such, but central bank action in response to it. For a long time the distinction didn’t matter much, but in the Warsh era it might. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
