I will join @scadrdata.bsky.social colleagues and speak at the Pint of Science Festival in Edinburgh on 20 May. Let's look into the data of school exclusions in Scotland and discover the story it tells us. #pint26 Get your @pintofscience.uk ticket here: lnkd.in/eG9uRhYe
Image title: Who gets excluded? Understanding exclusions in Scottish secondary schools. Talk abstract: School exclusions are often regarded as exceptional events. In 2024/25, the rate of exclusions was 15.2 per 1,000 pupils across Scottish schools. But this rate is deceptive, as it doesn’t show us the full picture of who is more likely to be excluded from school, where pupils are more likely to be excluded, and how exclusion rates compare to the rest of the UK. This project analyses linked administrative datasets to address these questions. Using multilevel modelling, we show how exclusion rates differ by pupils’ backgrounds, their schools, and differences in policy by council area.
