Shit like this being thrown at me when I was younger was part of why I was reading Dean Koontz already at age 10. It's gross to make talking down a "standard" of anything, and dishonest to kids who need books that say "you're going through shit? So are the people in this story. You aren't alone."

Here's how @theguardian.com is reporting on the shutdown. This is how you do it.
Transcribing reporting from The Guardian:

There are concerns that Trump could use the shutdown to lay off more government employees. The concerns arose because Trump himself said he might do this.

“When you shut it down, you have to do layoffs, so we’d be laying off a lot of people that are going to be very affected and the Democrats – they’re going to be Democrats,” Trump said on Tuesday.

The 79-year-old president continued to attack the Democratic party, adding: “No country can afford to pay for illegal immigration, healthcare for everybody that comes into the country. And that’s what they are insisting. [Democrats are not insisting on this.] They want open borders. [Democrats don’t.] They want men playing in women’s sports. They want transgender for everybody. [There is no part of the Democratic platform that insists all Americans transition gender.] They never stop. They don’t learn. We won an election in a landslide. [Trump won the popular vote by 1.5%.] They just don’t learn. So we have no choice. I have to do that for the country.”

What the Debate Me bros have done is found a way to filibuster the self-evident humanity of a person or group by making it an endless topic of debate. As Toni said: "None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing." It's not my job to prove my equality to those who think me inferior

@friede.bsky.social Doing some reflection on terminology, I feel like the word "modules" is very D&D coded compared to "scenarios", or at least as someone primarily involved in horror TTRPGs, I primarily hear "scenarios" being used. Are there any resources you're aware of about this split or usage?

Teaching AI literacy. (GenAI is wrong A LOT. And even though people tend to think it saves time, we now have randomized controlled trials that show situations where it takes *more* time even when participants self-report it's saving them time.)
Screenshot:

r/technology

I recently heard about a teacher who instead of trying to circumvent students using ai, which is impossible, she made assignments by going "ask ChatGPT to write a report on this subject, and then research how and why it's wrong".

Not only did the students discover that chatGPT is extremely wrong a lot of the time, it also lead them to realize that they should not use it as a primary source.

I've seen some talk about how we are witnessing the end of the professoriate as we know it and this may be true, but I think it's bigger: it's the decimation of the mission-oriented profession. Want to make a middle-class living serving the public good? Capitalism doesn't want that for you.

Mulling on gen AI and is this the first example of the Diffusion of Innovations theory bell curve reversing on itself? Many early adopters seemingly realized its capped potential & dangers as the diffusion passed into the "late majority" phase while the tech is blindly fueled by capitalist greed

I'm an "A.i." abolitionist. No consumer-facing LLMs or generative "A.i." in anything. Sure, machine learning in science and a few other limited applications is fine. But consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." that are based on theft, push disinfo, and can be manipulated by billionaires? No.

This lawsuit is brutal. One of the exhibits is the letter Universal sent to Midjourney, including a quote from a 2022 Forbes interview that I bet midjourney regrets
Universal did not permit, authorize, or license Midjourney to copy or use any of Universal's copyrighted works in connection with any version of its Image Service or to otherwise exploit Universal's works at any time. You acknowledged as much in a September 16, 2022 Forbes interview in which you confirmed that Midjourney never sought any copyright holders' consent to use or exploit their works:
Did you seek consent from living artists or work still under copyright?
No. There isn't really a way to get a hundred million images and know where they're coming from. It would be cool if images had metadata embedded in them about the copyright owner or something. But that's not a thing; there's not a registry. There's no way to find a picture on the Internet, and then automatically trace it to an owner and then have any way of doing anything to authenticate it.

This is 100% my philosophy too. I'll always prefer to make weird stuff I love, for a small group of weirdos, over twisting me and my work into unnatural shapes for mass appeal. You really don't need millions of followers to make a living as a creative, just like ~500-1000 folk who always show up.

Positive feedback about things you like to see counteracts the hate that gets spewed. The hateful side is constantly putting in feedback. If you don’t, theirs will be the only voices heard- and feedback matters. A lot.
