I know people instinctively recoil at monocausal explanations and want important trends to have sufficiently weighty causes, but “We built a novel social environment that rewards anger and lurid pessimism and moved 95% of political discourse into it” is a pretty good explanation for a lot of stuff

“Physically, Long COVID has absolutely just ruined my life.” “Doctors just don’t know what to do with you.” “There’s no help coming your way.” People living with #LongCovid describe how the illness has changed their lives. Highlights from a PBS NewsHour report aired in 2023.

Black text on a white page that reads as follows:

Too often, homeless New Yorkers cycle from our hospitals to our streets — making it harder to continue treatment and find long-term stability.

The City's Bridge to Home program in Manhattan ends the cycle by providing a safe place for New Yorkers to live while they receive medical care, apply to jobs, and find an apartment. The program has been a massive success.

Today, we’re expanding Bridge to Home to Brooklyn and Queens, so more New Yorkers get the help they need.

A great illustration of the way social media has essentially shredded society’s informational immune system: The USSR spent a fortune trying to spread conspiracy theories, without success because they couldn’t crack newsrooms. Today, you can reach the globe with a post that costs $20 to make.

The S4ME forum has started a thread for members to share stories of their ME/CFS journeys in up to 10 sentences: s4me.info/threads/your... The WE&ME foundation will ask some contributors if they can use their stories for advocacy. This is my story. Please consider sharing yours on @s4me.info
Once an academic scholar and keen sportsman, my ME/CFS symptoms came on suddenly in 1992 when I was a 19 year old student, following tonsillitis, suspected glandular fever and two courses of antibiotics. The transition from someone who was essentially well and able to participate in normal activities to someone who was very obviously unwell and incapacitated was marked and sudden. However, I suspect that there may have been something wrong with me prior to that as I had been unusually tired and prone to infections for a few years, along with unidentified problems in my knee and shoulder, which had limited my ability to run and play racket sports.

After struggling to live independently on and off for about 18 months, I returned to live with my parents fulltime in 1994. If I had known then what lay ahead, I would not have been able to cope, and I don’t know if I would still be alive. For about seven years I was almost completely bedridden, in excruciating discomfort, urinating into a bottle and eating meals in bed. Now aged 53 I am mostly housebound and cared for by my 80 year old mother in a wheelchair adapted annexe on the side of her house. One can be philosophical about loss and incapacity – about absence – but there is no philosophy that can overcome the presence of extreme physical discomfort and pain; of constantly feeling unwell. I am luckier than many people with my diagnosis in that some of my family and friends have been extremely supportive, and I have had some kind and helpful doctors, but like most people with ME/CFS I have also been let down, mistreated, ridiculed and abused, both personally and institutionally.

Love, solidarity and productivity, however limited, help to get me through the days, but I’m not sure that I could keep going without hope – hope of scientific understanding and a better quality of life.

I came up with some more inane bullshit for everyone to argue about!
(September 23, 2026 at 10:44am)
Fake opinions to argue over…
- Never turn left on a first date.
- Every kindergarten student should have an unpaid internship.
- The periodic table is too sexual.
- Bigfoot should be allowed to vote.
- Having a dream is the same as reading a book.
- You can wear a crop top to a funeral if the deceased person was hot when they died.

the core assumption you are making is that all human jobs will be performed by AI for cheap. That's the assumption. Of course under this assumption human wages fall; this is almost tautological. It's an insult to calculus to pretend you need to take a partial derivative to get to your conclusion.

Most real problems take longer than 15 minutes to describe. Most software that’s supposed to solve a problem you described in 15 minutes fails to actually solve what makes the problem a problem or else breaks under the slightest strain or else creates two new problems where the old one was.

Alright here’s what I think about this. For me, this argument is a little bit slippery about what it means for a system to have “a final goal”, and takes for granted that any intelligent system must behave as though it has such a thing. I don’t think this is necessary, and I don’t think LLMs do.
