Right. How do you pick up and help a student pull at a useful thread in their work if you don’t engage with it? How do you develop deep mentoring relationships without building knowledge and trust through engagement?!

A surprise benefit about teaching Museum Ethics in a building next to the White House right now is that the major paper proposals from my students are 🔥🔥🔥. A whole generation of fired up museum practitioners are going to be made from this moment—and I cannot wait to see what comes out of that.

“What it signals is that the law has told a majority Black capital city that its suffering is real but its remedy does not exist,” Holmes added. This is deeply disturbing.

“My greatest concern is over keeping the collection together,” says Peck. “It needs to be cared for, for reasons that extend well beyond Philadelphia and the academy. These are collections we hold in trust for the world.” Excellent piece on the complexity and implications of moving the collection.

Smithsonian changes course, will put Latino museum in existing building
Regents voted to put the museum in a 145-year-old building instead of constructing a new one, which would require congressional approval.

On my blog, I wrote about how America's museums are falling apart. The US has 20k+ museums, and most have historic buildings with leaky roofs, failing HVAC units, and flooding basements. What they don't have is money for repairs. Please read/share! 🧵 johngmarks.beehiiv.com/p/america-s-...

As the author of a forthcoming book on how Americans remember (and forget) George Washington's legacy, and a public historian who's worked on the 250th anniversary for almost a decade now, I have lots of thoughts about this. For now I'll just say to media friends interested in this story: hit me up.

What I’d like to understand is how much damage from this term could be undone somewhat quickly and easily? Obv. there are long-term effects like broken international relations that will take time to repair, but could the Dems easily stop the camps, bring health and EPA regulations back, etc?

It’s not so much that Trump & co don’t think slavery was important, they want to remove this history precisely *because* of how important it was. They don’t want people to learn about slavery because then people would understand how it continues to shape the landscape of inequality in America today.
