Right. How do you pick up and help a student pull at a useful thread in their work if you don’t engage with it? How do you develop deep mentoring relationships without building knowledge and trust through engagement?!

A surprise benefit about teaching Museum Ethics in a building next to the White House right now is that the major paper proposals from my students are 🔥🔥🔥. A whole generation of fired up museum practitioners are going to be made from this moment—and I cannot wait to see what comes out of that.

The important part of a to-do list (for me) is organising my thoughts… it’s less about what needs to be done—it’s about creating a framework for action. It’s yet another cognition task that I have no interest in eschewing responsibility for. It’s meaningful because it’s mine.

“What it signals is that the law has told a majority Black capital city that its suffering is real but its remedy does not exist,” Holmes added. This is deeply disturbing.

“My greatest concern is over keeping the collection together,” says Peck. “It needs to be cared for, for reasons that extend well beyond Philadelphia and the academy. These are collections we hold in trust for the world.” Excellent piece on the complexity and implications of moving the collection.

Smithsonian Regents approve plan to locate National Museum of the American Latino in the Arts and Industries Building. "Because the Smithsonian owns the Arts and Industries Building, the institution can decide how to use it without additional legislation."

Smithsonian changes course, will put Latino museum in existing building
Regents voted to put the museum in a 145-year-old building instead of constructing a new one, which would require congressional approval.

On my blog, I wrote about how America's museums are falling apart. The US has 20k+ museums, and most have historic buildings with leaky roofs, failing HVAC units, and flooding basements. What they don't have is money for repairs. Please read/share! 🧵 johngmarks.beehiiv.com/p/america-s-...

Have you ever used churu treats while trimming nails? We give our GoodBoy a treat that he licks whilst his nails are trimmed and it’s pretty straightforward as a result.

I’ve used the 9/11 Memorial Museum as a case study on collecting and displaying objects connected to trauma in teaching for several years. In that time, my students have transitioned from being a majority who have some sense of it as an event in their lifetime to those for whom it is truly history.

Oh, it’s such a great Zoo (with some still-existing historical enclosures that are amazing for history/museum people…) IF money is an issue, consider going in winter. Fewer of the animals are out, but it’s like $10 entry and a lovely spot for an outdoor walk.

For now I'll just say to media friends interested in this story: hit me up.
