There’s a group “New Tacoma Neighborhood Council” (newtacoma.org) that is ginning up opposition to Tacoma’s plans to eliminate parking minimums. It’s full of the usual concern trolling. Will post link to their letter and op ed when I can get it

Every family deserves access to healthy food. That’s why, in my first budget, I have proposed making permanent $10 million worth of investments to fight food insecurity in Seattle. Together, we’re building a city where no family has to choose between rent and groceries.

When the junk fees bill was introduced to council, the Mayor's Office explained that the proposed strengthened enforcement would be funded by increasing the fee that landlords pay to register their units. The coalition is urging City Council to adopt the $11 biennial increase without any exceptions

Can you advocate in support of renters at tomorrow's budget hearing? Oct. 6, 1pm remote or 5pm in person. The Stay Housed, Stay Healthy Coalition has created a guide to giving public comment with suggested talking points to help you get started: tinyurl.com/tenant-servi...
A group of six older people holding handmade signs pose outside of council chambers. The signs say, "Tenant services = awareness of my rights as a senior tenant!!" "Senior renters need tenant services," "Save tenant services", and "We are senior renters! We need tenant services!"

FYI, this is happening because WSF is refusing to even give engineers a cost of living adjustment in their next contract. The salary they mention here just happens to be the highest out of six. Also, it's illegal to not give them sick leave. It's not a flex!
A Facebook post from Washington State Ferries:

This morning, 23 engine room employees called in sick. Every employee qualified to fill those positions has declined to fill them and keep the ferries running. All of the employees calling in sick, and declining to fill those vacancies, are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) who represent engine room employees. The ferries cannot run without these roles being filled. As a result, 13 of our 18 ferries are not in service. We understand how disruptive this is to thousands of Washingtonians. We expect our employees to return to work as soon as possible.
The employees who work in the engine room play a vital role in providing WSF’s safe service, which is why Staff Chief Engineers have a base salary of $157,000, and can make more than $350,000 a year with overtime, as well as annual sick and vacation leave, and retirement accrual.
All WSF vessels are fully staffed at the beginning of every service day at U.S. Coast Guard required levels. When an employee calls in sick, request dispatchers work to fill the position as quickly as possible. When those positions aren’t filled, the boat cannot sail, which is what we’re experiencing today across 13 of the 18 vessels currently in service.

Philanthropy is down, budgets are tight, and many nonprofits get city contracts. It’s a trickledown that is having terrible impacts.

At the same time it’s very hard for organizations that do things like tenant support to not get additional funds when there is additional need. More people are renters & support for tenant orgs has always been underfunded. This is true for many nonprofits.

Tomorrow is an opportunity for budget testimony at Seattle City Council - last few Mayors over promised with one time budget items but this administration is trying something different. They actually don’t want to push off things to future. Some Council want reelection not fiscal responsibility.

It is day 4 of #WeekWithoutDriving. Getting rides from other folks or paying for a cab is OK. WWD is not a car-free endeavor. It’s about the time & social capital & $$$ you’d spend if you weren’t able to drive yourself. If you were always having to ask for rides. Or pay for cabs.

To maintain access Metro would coildadd the 4th & Cherry stop to the 101 / 150. It would take folks to Westlake using the 6th @ Olive stop to get to the Polyclinic. Access to democracy and healthcare should be a priority for bus routes, not just commute trip reduction.

Every extra intersection we make people cross to access government services impedes democracy. Every intersection crossed puts people at risk that don’t need / want that risk. Your response does not acknowledge that harm has been done here and needs to be addressed publicly.

I visited the Union River Chum Trap in Belfair, WA to chat with the volunteers and see some salmon!
A lovely painting of chum salmon for the Union River Chumtrap of the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group. There is a trailer on the right. There is data about the Summer Chum Project on the leftThe chum trap in the river that all salmon have to swim through to make it upstream. This makes it easier to count the fishlooking downriver at Union RiverRight downstream of the counter station. The volunteers told me there were a bunch of salmon hanging out in the shadows below the bushes on the other end
