worth also noting that both the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti happened in her district, and on top of the obviously racist targeting of her personally this is also an attempt to deny the people of Minneapolis their democratically elected representative

And then, halfway through or so, this magic (perhaps evil) element changes their relationship to romantic, and I had to set the book down. I'm so disappointed. This was such a huge breakthrough for a book, but they couldn't hold true to it. Ugh.

I'm reading this book with a premise of a super close relationship between a man and a woman who are strictly friends. Other people misunderstand them all the time. And I just loved little details like not correcting a stranger for saying "wife" because the mistake recognizes their closeness.

Rape culture doesn’t exist in a vacuum inside an otherwise healthy culture. Neither does the way “A.i.” companies steal copyrighted works for profit with no accountability. Nor the destruction of nature. It's all patriarchal entitlement, the powerful get to take and use whatever they want.

Student debt is at the heart of why campus sexual violence derails victims’ lives too. The primary reason victims drop out of college is because they are encouraged to take temporary leaves of absence—and then they can’t return until they are current on student loan payments.

I got this because of the Jen Bartel cover. It looks so cool I might put need to put it on the wall. You can't really see, but Jen signed it in gold, which catches the light in a fun way, too.
Isola comic book. Image Jan. 6. $3.99 US. Author names across the bottom: Fletcher, Kerschl, Msassyk. Cover art is in purple and blue tones mostly. A woman in partial armor holding a spear is standing next to a tiger in forest. Mushrooms are on the trees, butterflies in the air, and a fox across a stream that has a bit of fog. The color choices are super interesting. So are all the details of the woman's outfit and hair.

AI is basically that for the whole economy and the workings of government. It's a bleed-out of current conditions. Not all of these companies are going to make it, but the billionaires are counting on a situation in which existing social relations can no longer be reproduced. A re-ordering.

And remember, all of this is happening amid the AI buildout. AI, which is not a coherent set of products and services, but rather a commercial and political project, can be understood as a full-spectrum class-war offensive. An offensive waged by one industry, which put their guy Vance in the WH.

As for the folksy stuff, they might be building a mystery like Sarah McLaughlin, but it's pretty classic film games to create a pretend version. They turn on one street and are suddenly filming in another city or across town or whatever. Removing local resources helps the story they want to tell.

I used to think the focus on touristy crap was because the writer didn't know the place, but I've found myself purposefully inserting some because it seemed the most likely way to connect with the most readers who HAD seen or were interested in the place but had very limited knowledge.

The gray cat was modeled off Little Bat. The sun is coming through the window casting sharp shadows on the fluffy blankets and fur in the photo so that the textures are all really emphasized, and Little Bat's tongue is bright pink.
