Spend half a year preparing for a swedish national science grant based on a well-scored rejected draft from a year ago. Received this week 5 numbers (rubric score) with no further explanations as my score was not high enough for even a sentence of feedback. So feeling a bit bummed out.

Summer is nearly upon Sweden, some nice walk today to get my head a bit to relax
View of a lake with blue sky and some white clouds. At the edges of the lake, forrest stretches along it's shore. In the foreground two rocks are visible and water reflections in the brown iron heavy water. In the distance a small boat leans into the lake from the shoreline.

Spent the entire last week at #CHI26 in Barcelona. For me the conference feels too big and weirdly narrow in what was presented. I know that LLMs are huge right now but nearly all posters/ papers were about some take on integrating existing LLMs into some other thing. Barcelona is pretty though

COMIC: What Artists Do
PANEL 1: A black woman with a grey streak in her curly hair, stands at a canvas on an easel, holding a paint bush.
Narration text: PAINTER

I think one of the most frustrating things about announcements like this, as someone who has spent a lot of time on R&D teams in the game industry, is how many *genuinely groundbreaking* things get cast aside because they aren’t visually flashy and conversely how much money goes to stuff like this

Allen AI has released a fully open (weights, data, and code) mixture-of-experts model. It's super small (1B active parameters out of 7B total) but has good performance for its size. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2409.02060 #machinelearning #AI 🤖 🧪
Img credit N. Muennighoff, taken from the linked paper.

This image has two sections:

Performance vs. Cost Graph:

The y-axis shows performance (% MMLU) and the x-axis shows cost (billion active parameters).
Blue circles represent Dense LMs, and dark blue diamonds represent Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models.
OLMoE-1B-7B (marked by a pink star) stands out in the top-left for having a good performance/cost ratio.

Table: "How open are open MoEs?":

The table compares models based on their openness in categories like "Model, Data, Code, Logs," and the number of checkpoints.
OLMoE-1B-7B is highlighted and is open in all categories.

Our recent article on Sonic Dancer about movement/dance and generative audio with a focus on the making process just arrived today as a beautiful 4 page print in the interaction design magazine. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... am super happy with how the article looks :) 🧪
Cover of a magazine, showing a head looking sideways and a hand pulling up the crown of the head to create a effect like orange peal of forming a spiral to reveal a swirly form inside. Also, reading in large letters IX at the top and in smaller letters "Redesigning Interaction Design with AI"Showing a double page of a magazine folded open on a desk with a big red square in the top left reading Enter and an image showing a electronic device, cables, screws and a keyboard going over a large part of the double page. In large letters the article title "Sonic Dancer: A Low-Cost, Sound-Based Device To Explore Shared Movement and Dance Through Generative Live Soundscapes" is shown.
