Because Trump is a mobster: he's willing to unleash his stochastic goon army to have them killed. Same thing that keeps most members of Congress from speaking up.

Good evening to Juan Linz, who was right about presidentialism & wrong that 🇺🇸 was immune to its faults. A system that can’t remove an executive who declared himself a Mad King in the Oval today, & now is reiterating his OK with 🇺🇸 cities being destroyed has completely failed at its most basic task.

Before he was appointed, Kash Patel was flagged by FBI counterintelligence agents as being deeply enmeshed in influence operations run by the Russians and Chinese. After he took over, Patel began systematically eliminating all Russian and Chinese counterintelligence capacity. What to make of that?

As Trump focuses the FBI on immigration, counterintelligence is falling behind
The cuts come as a consequence of President Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel's focus on violent crime and immigration, leaving other priorities understaffed.

One of the most heinous examples is Matt Walsh suggesting that, actually, Jane Doe raped the frat boys because they were also under the influence. I thought it bore a certain resemblance to some of Andrew Johnson’s comments on slavery. www.liberalcurrents.com/the-illusion...
But Walsh isn't satisfied with victim blaming. He goes so far as to assert that, given the consumption of drugs and alcohol, the fraternity boys couldn't possibly be held responsible themselves:

I'm not kidding when I say that the Cornell frat guys should file a counter suit accusing the woman of raping them. According to her own testimony, some of the men were drunker than she was. By her logic, and the logic of her supporters, they were even less capable of consent. She was the rapist in that case. There's no way out of our current madness except by holding feminists to their own standards. When I read Walsh's comments I see a level of male supremacism that leaves my jaw on the floor. It also reminds me of a quote from President Andrew Johnson delivered to Frederick Douglass when pressed about protecting freed slaves:

If I know myself, and the feelings of my own heart, they have been for the colored man. I have owned slaves and bought slaves, but / never sold one. I might say, however, that practically, so far as my connection with slaves has gone, I have been their slave instead of their being mine.

Since someone asked—the way to fix this is by big structural reforms. Proportional representation in Congress, add seats, add states, quadruple Congressional investigatory and policy staff, reform/disempower the Article III branch, rewrite admin law etc. All of it requires re-empowering Congress.

Wrote a thing Monday. Got held back and is a weekend read at the Guardian today. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
While the criminal justice system should address reports of rape, we know that rates of conviction are appallingly low for a number of reasons. Although, thanks to feminist interventions, the legal system is better equipped to understand this crime and less prejudiced against victims, we will not change the world through that means.

After rape allegations at Cornell University, why are women again being urged to talk to their sons? Why not men?

Sexual assault arises in part through both the entitlement and the desire to abuse and dehumanize women, which is in part about definitions of both masculinity and femininity: masculinity in that domination, violation and degradation are seen as status-enhancing, femininity in the perception that women’s bodies are for men to use, women’s voices and rights to be ignored.

The most compelling thing I’ve read in response to the Cornell case is in an essay by feminist writer Soraya Chemaly. She cites anthropologist Peggy Sanday, who told her that there are “rape-prone” and “rape-free” societies: “She found that in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety and freedom.”

They’re societies in which women’s rights to bodily and social self-determination are respected, and a man who violates those rights would face severe consequences. “Rape-prone cultures, on the other hand, treat rape as an entitlement in a system that revolves around masculine contests and hierarchies.”

Bill Kristol gets this just right. Sexual assault is a prime tenet of MAGA thought... namely it's a "natural thing," and a MAGA government will work hard to ensure impunity. And this seems to explain the entire career of Ken Paxton, including his rise from obscurity within the Texas GOP.

@lilymasonphd.bsky.social is one of our leading scholars of polarization in U.S. politics, and she is very clear-eyed about how the widespread adoption of that frame has led lots of analysts to misdiagnose the problem with contemporary U.S. democracy
From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The problem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
