Context: 9c/ 5.15d is the current hardest grade in sport climbing. There are only five (5) routes graded 9c (or 5.15d in the US system). Every route has been climbed by a single climber. Each is so hard that it's never been repeated by anyone else. Until today.

The mad lad did it????? Jakob Schubert repeats DNA, becoming the first climber to do two 9c/ 5.15d sport climbs. DNA is now the first repeated 9c, assuming Jakob confirms the grade. HOLY SHIT.

Enjoying every student protest sign that refers to Emmanuel Macron's wife, like this one, which translates roughly to "Macron, at least, had a French Professor." [the students are protesting austerity and school cuts; Macron's wife was Macron's french teacher]
Student placard at the protests in France that says "Macron lui au moins il avait une prof de Francais" (Macron, at least, had a professor of french - implication that the student does not)

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

State censorship’s little dilemma: In the above video you see that police approved - and chuckled over - a protest sign saying “Macron, fuck your teacher, not ours.” (referring to Brigitte Macron). Now we learn that Macron is furious it appeared on public service TV without Channel 2 apologising.

Bally Bagayoko's incredible bravery here has also been (admirably, very admirably) imitated by many other politicians who have tried to intervene on behalf of the high schoolers. There are also several clips of Anthony Smith, député européen LFI, trying to engage with the forces where he is ignored.

Also earlier this year I was assured by a fellow immigration court advocate that the genocide in Palestine had "nothing to do" with immigration in the USA and was a purely foreign affair. But the administration is deporting and detaining anti-Israeli/pro-Palestinian activists. It's all connected.

ICE claims they're only detaining people who fall into narrow exceptions (like national security threats), but like - look at this guy's case. Even if you assume he DID pull down the Israeli flag (doubtful), are we saying that's a national security threat?

ICE was stalking the judge's courtroom, so the volunteers knew a detention was imminent. An incredible volunteer actually bargained with ICE and got them to agree to let her talk to everyone who exited the courtroom + get their emergency contacts.

I've been following this gentleman's case since the beginning because close friends of mine were volunteering in immigration court and messaging me during his detention. Yes, ICE is still detaining people in immigration court despite the various rulings prohibiting such arrests.
Federal officials charged Mr. Ovadia with remaining in the country without legal status, summoned him to immigration court in Manhattan and arrested him there last month.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

From Pleincœur, clockwise from left: noisette, feuilleté au riz au lait, and kouign aux pommes. The kouign aux pommes - basically an apple turnover with what I assume was kouign-amann dough - was good, but not amazing. The apple filling was less flavorful than I was hoping.
Three pastries. The left, a noisette, is a seashell-shaped pastry. The broad end is covered in a brown topping, while the rest is striped. On top is a feuilleté au riz - two spirals of layered pastry, each topped with caramel. On the right is a kouign aux pommes, a round, heavily baked disc of spiraled layered pastry.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Because one of the"advantages" of sending immigrants to this third floor is that no one is allowed in there.

SF Boswell @sfboswell.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
A couple months ago, we won a preliminary injunction guaranteeing the rights of observers to watch all court proceedings and to interact with immigrant respondents. And it's hard not to see this new policy as DHS coming up with a way to *prevent* court observers from talking to immigrants.

Obviously disaster averted, but this raises the question of - why are these men sent down to floor 3 so they can talk to the judge whose courtroom is on floor 12?????
100
SF Boswell @sfboswell.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
A court observer noticed these guys waiting in the wrong place, and got them down to floor 3. On Floor 3, staff was like "Oh, you're late - go talk to the judge in his courtroom on 12." So they all go back to floor 12, where they go in the courtroom and talk to the judge, who reopens their case.

SF Boswell @sfboswell.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Last week, two men were "assigned" to a black site courtroom on 3, but the court staff was so confused that they put these guys to wait in the wrong waiting room (on floor 12). So the guys didn't show up on time to their hearing, and they were given an in-absentia deportation order

SF Boswell @sfboswell.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
It's this bizarre and pointless odyssey. Why are you being sent to the third floor when your judge is on floor 12? It's not a space thing - the courtrooms for these judges are EMPTY (so far). The only and major reason to do this is to separate people from advocates
