People always ask “where are you going to get the money to pay for stuff like housing and healthcare and public transit” and the answer is the same as it’s always been Make the rich pay their fair share

A tree that took 250 years to grow getting cut down by Donald's jackbooted thugs in minutes is the type of on-the-nose symbolism that would have a writer panned by critics as a hack.

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

Lafayette Park and the Ellipse exist as public parks because the nation's early leaders deemed it unnecessary and unseemly to fence off palatial grounds in the people's capital. "Trump's plan" is an insult to the nation's people and ideals.

The language is designed to *sound* reasonable but the purpose is to define "color-blind meritocracy" as white people, particularly white men are the ~real~ contributors, should dictate on their whims, and any infringement is a violation against the natural order.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

I used to, as a teen RPG enthusiast, feel weird/bad about the fact that I spent more time “thinking about the game” than I did at the table, making me a “phony” player or whatever, but as an adult returning to the hobby, I realize that’s most people’s experience and it’s fine!

Elite universities mea culpas about the “loss of trust” in higher education so often fail to consider the force of the longterm propagandistic attack on universities, given extensive play in conservative media, that long preceded Trump, but which he has massively accelerated.

Texas, in particular, is actually very easy to draw as a Dem gerrymander because it's so urbanized. here's a map that's 22R-16D by Trump 2024 numbers but 19-19 for Biden 2020 and 21D-17R for O'Rourke 2018, and it's cleaner than the actual 30R-8D 2026 map davesredistricting.org/maps#viewmap...
