not that you should expect anything more than rank idiocy from this pair of racists, but the idea that whiteness means a "high trust" society of "social cohesion" is some of the stupidest shit i have ever heard. these people live in a fantasy land that you could dispel by simply opening a book.

Additionally, watching Pelosi and Chan try to spin / puff up being chair of the budget committee is obvious and very embarrassing! Meanwhile we can choose a highly effective and relentless legislator who is also completely unafraid to take the fight to the current administration.

Wiener is a generational talent in legislating & the most obvious heir to Pelosi herself, and it’s sad to see her back Chan out of personal pique. Chan seems nice but has no accomplishments to point to from her two terms and has exhibited none of the fight or fearlessness we need in Congress.

Cities are living things and neighborhoods change as newcomers leave their mark. This is okay, even if it is often uncomfortable. The best thing we can do is build a lot of new homes so that new people can move in without displacing long time residents.

I live in a 120+ year old building. It’s missing basic amenities many folks take for granted that have come along since then. The “charm” of extremely old housing stock comes with a lot of costs! www.sfchronicle.com/realestate/a...
Furthermore, in San Francisco, having tons of pre-World War II buildings isn't much of a rarity. Citywide, a whopping 45% of homes have been standing since then — by far the highest share of any California city with at least 500,000 people. It's also on par with Boston's 47%, the highest of large cities in the U.S., the Chronicle found.

I could not disagree more strongly with this approach. Landmarking bars, clubs, dance studios, and poets’ homes locks the city in amber and blocks new housing, which makes it impossible for non-rich future young people to move to New York and contribute to the culture. Just lay a plaque!

Berman's project has been remarkably successful over the last quarter-century. By the start of 2002, when Berman started at Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, there were only 86 historic districts in the city; 12 years later, there were
131. With so many of the buildings downtown with any kind of historic architectural significance already under landmark protections, Berman has shifted his focus to preserving properties with some kind of social importance. He has successfully fought for the landmarking of the Stonewall Inn, for example, as well as the legendary Pyramid Club in the East Village, and his group is working to landmark the homes of the poet and publisher Steve Cannon and sites downtown connected to Anais Nin, Audre Lorde, Patti Smith, Martha Graham, and others.CURBED

These kinds of sites, he told me, are "an important part of what makes New York interesting and wonderful. I also think that we learn from our history, and I think that if there's anything that we've seen in the last couple of years, it's that if we don't understand our history, we make terrible mistakes. We don't understand how we got to where we are today. We don't understand what it took to get there. A lot of rights that we take for granted, people had to fight very hard for. They were not always a given. So I think having an understanding and a respect for history is an incredibly important element of a healthy present and future."

This should not be an elected position because it attracts people who see it as a steppingstone to something better & who won’t be willing to make tough calls or tradeoffs. It what it is, but I’m skeptical she is the right person for this role, esp since she hasn’t offered any details to speak of.

Sarah Rogers @serogers.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
She has offered almost no specifics for a nominally ambitious plan that will require tradeoffs & accurate pricing to work. Eg, last I checked, she has only said that insurance will be priced on cost, risk, OR income, which lead to very different realities (like SF subsidizing sprawl into the WUI).

Some of the new stuff getting built now will someday be viewed as iconic. Some will be seen as ugly and will get replaced over time. This is just how it goes and is fine. I do agree that overengineering the aesthetics in the code constrains creativity and has unintended consequences.

Sarah Rogers @serogers.bsky.social · 10/04/2026
Yeah, this does not hold up. There’s a long history of people hating new architectural styles or specific buildings we now view as iconic and beloved when they first appeared. NIMBYs might point to style when justifying their opposition, but it’s an excuse like any other. Also, beauty is subjective!
