I really appreciate that Coates as a speaker guides an audience through the process of moral reasoning aloud. I think interviewers and pundits want to skip that step and he just will not. I think it is a really important tool of showing your work, for lack of better words, for your convictions.

Healthcare has been an economic bright spot, just about the only sector that's both growing and a net plus in jobs. Trump and the GOP Congress scheduled most of their healthcare cuts for 2027, so they'd be after the midterms. That will add to the country's economic problems next year. 2028 too.

I have worked with them! But this makes me feel like I should clarify: I am not talking about attorney spaces where attorneys are going back & forth on decision making. I was referring to movement spaces where it is important to cede space to non-attorney folk with lived experiences + expertise.

I have gotten yelled at so many times for saying this in spaces with attorneys. Few of them (us?) think we're part of the problem. But we dominate conversations, decisionmaking, & autopsies to such a negative extent. My legal heroes are the humble ones who keep quiet even when it hurts.

That's a big chunk of it! The other chunk of it is who trains you in law school & who you are trained to persuade. A fair amount of my professors were folks who learned to write in segregated spaces AND we were taught to write to persuade other attorneys + judges. It's a bad recipe.

More people DIED than were housed after the eviction of Echo Park Lake's encampment.
Excerpt from "Storaging the Homeless": "The eviction of the Echo Park Lake encampment in March 2021, by a “battle-ready” police force, and the subsequent enclosure of the
park, was a pivotal moment in Los Angeles. Then-Mayor Garcetti declared this to be “the largest housing transition of an encampment
in the history of the city” and promised that the displaced would be housed in a year. The longitudinal research conducted by the After
Echo Park Lake Research Collective, which included several of us, exposed the lie at hand. More people died than were housed and
scores more were disappeared. But the “ruse of housing,” a phrase we borrow from housing justice scholar and organizer, Carla
Orendorff, justified the displacement and became the blueprint for the spatial governance of homelessness in Los Angeles, including
Mayor Bass’s Inside Safe. While the landmark Supreme Court decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson (2024) expanded the authority of
local governments to criminalize homeless encampments, such criminalization was already well under way in Los Angeles, including
with the amendment of the city’s long-standing anti-camping ordinance, LAMC 41.18, in 2021. The Los Angeles Community Action
Network characterized that amendment as a “Jim Crow, Sundown Town, segregationist throw-back,” and the hefty 2024 report by
Human Rights Watch, “You Have to Move!” The Cruel and Ineffective Criminalization of Unhoused Persons in Los Angeles, provides
meticulous analysis of its effects."
