In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

Kids too young for social media are secretly hanging out in NPR podcast comment sections on Spotify. (Thank you to Sarah Shapiro for bringing this to my attention!) A producer recently noticed strings of what looked like gibberish under his show on Spotify — comments like “Aw ok mh,” “Gilgamesh quit and I’m crying,” and “Last Friday, I broke up with my GF.” The posts seemed to be talking to each other, so the team assumed they were a new breed of bots and removed them. Then a Gen Z staffer took a look and determined that they weren’t bots, they were kids either too young for regular social media or blocked from it by their parents, using NPR’s Spotify comments as an ad hoc chat room. When reached for the story, one of them explained to NPR that they’d picked shows “that didn’t have many comments.” I think we’re due for an AIM resurgence.

Learning over an extended childhood has been fundamental to survival during human evolutionary history. Researchers show how Sumatran orangutans use their 8 years of dependency to master a broad diet, necessary for independent survival. They find that infants have individual tendencies to engage in social and individual learning, which together determine diet profile breadth acquired by independence. The finding offers insights into the evolutionary roots of the complex learning mechanisms that characterize humans.

"You don’t need to buy into corporate narratives about artificial general intelligence to be worried about these companies losing control of their own systems or behaving irresponsibly." www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
Even outside of AI, the world feels incredibly volatile. Extraordinary risks of all kinds—including war and pandemics—have come to pass in the past decade. Individuals with power and money, in politics and in Silicon Valley, are acting with impunity. The AI doomerism has spread so quickly in part because the world is primed to receive narratives that make us feel helpless, confused, and more than a little alarmed. The AI-apocalypse panic feeds off this. It’s a story that assumes that humans will lose control and that we have no choice. But that’s false. We do have a choice.

Muy bueno. "A system designed to stop machines from rebelling will differ from one designed to hold laboratories responsible."
“Rogue AI” isn’t a diagnosis. The Hugging Face hack instead points to switched-off safeguards, tasks assigned without a valid exit, rewards for persistence, and an internet-accessible proxy.
The distinction is especially important now as Washington begins to legislate in an atmosphere shaped by the more dramatic version of this story. Mr. Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar (D., Texas) plan to introduce a bill that would “ban artificial superintelligence” and pause advanced AI development until a new federal agency establishes safety standards, with noncompliant companies facing what the lawmakers call the “corporate death penalty.”
Frontier AI should be regulated. Systems increasingly capable of autonomous cyber operations, biological research or infrastructure manipulation pose questions that no responsible government can ignore. But sane regulation depends on sane causal diagnosis.
A system designed to stop machines from rebelling will differ from one designed to hold laboratories responsible for testing practices, network architecture, safeguards, monitoring and intervention. The first treats the machine as the source of agency; the second asks who designed the environment in which the machine acted.
