As someone who came up posting in a niche message board of left-leaning nerds (was the youngest of anyone by a long shot), it's nice that this is now a platform of the exact same group

Saying he'd be cool with Iran nuking my home city is pretty bad but not quite as bad as when Hillary said some trump supporters were deplorable so I can see why the media turned the latter into a major scandal and not the former

Realized that I bartend in the same way Adam Friedland interviews (barrages of overly considered questions, talking over the response the second I get the gist of what they're saying, starting a bit then immediately abandoning it) and it leads to infinite 30% tips

The obvious risk from AI is that our institutions are premised on human contact and trust. Bank fraud and identity fraud will skyrocket until someone finds a solution. Do you think your 80 year old uncle won’t believe an AI that calls him pretending to be you under financial duress?

Words build meaning from mutual social connotations. Our vocabularies revolve around communities, rising and falling with our own societies. AI destroys that. It reduces words into flat signifiers that will mean far less attached to us. I wish I was smart enough to express this idea in more detail

People are right to be mad about the predictable Platner fiasco, but it's worth remembering that last year a ton of establishment Democrats supported disgraced sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo against clean-as-a-whistle Zohran. Tolerating problem men is an issue across the ideological spectrum.

much our country, including our elites, live in a farcical anti-reality where Trump's was running on "secure the border, throw out the criminals" and Biden was running on "open borders." In reality Trump actually supported "mass ethnic cleansing" and Biden ran on "secure the border"

personally I think it's a very big deal that the Canada bureau chief for the @nytimes.com — certainly one of the highest-paid journalists in the country — asked an unspecified "AI tool" what Poilievre said & published its AI-hallucinated quotes in her reporting.
Editors’ Note: May 1, 2026
This article was updated after The Times learned that a remark attributed to Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, was in fact an A.I.-generated summary of his views about Canadian politics that A.I. rendered as a quotation. The reporter should have checked the accuracy of what the A.I. tool returned. The article now accurately quotes from a speech delivered by Mr. Poilievre in April. He said, “My personal opinion is that when a member of Parliament goes back on the word they made to their constituents and switches parties, constituents should be able to petition to throw them out and have a byelection. That would put the people back in charge of our democracy rather than having dirty backroom Liberal deals by Mark Carney determine our destiny.” He did not refer to politicians who changed allegiances as turncoats in that speech.

thanks I hate it
Google has an institutional advantage over its A.l. competitors in the form of the Chromebook and its built-in
"learning management system," Google
Classroom. During the CoVID-19 pandemic, as school districts scrambled to set up remote learning, many of them found a cheap and easy option in the Chromebook, which strikes me as little more than a slow browser connected to a janky trackpad. A report by the U.S.
Public Interest Research Group noted that, by the last quarter of 2020, year-on-year sales of the device were up by two hundred and eighty-seven per cent.
In a national survey conducted by the Times last November, about eighty per cent of K-12 teachers said that their districts use Chromebooks, which has created a vast captive market for Gemini and helped make A.1. in schools a near-universal prospect. Then, in March, students at my eleven-year-old daughter's public middle school began receiving new Google
Chromebooks, and that is when I heard the tap-tap of the cloven hooves approaching our doorstep. The
Chromebooks, which the students use in every class and for homework, came pre-installed with an all-ages version of Gemini, a suite of A.I. tools. When my daughter, who is in sixth grade, begins writing an essay, she gets a prompt:
"Help me write." If she is starting work on a slide-show presentation, the prompt is "Help me visualize." She shoos away these interruptions, but they persist:
"Help me edit." "Beautify this slide.' The image generator is there, if she'd ever wish to pull the plug on her imagination. The Gemini chatbot is there, if she ever wants to talk to no one.
