Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

People keep analogizing rent control to the minimum wage, suggesting that maybe empirical work will refute the theoretical work. But the empirical work is generally showing what theory would predict.

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

I gave a talk in Sweden many months ago and haven't been reimbursed. The delay? The Swedish tax authority has to approve it. It should be routine. But they want me to go for an in-person identity check at the Swedish embassy. WTF? Dying to see the racial breakdown of whom this happens to.

This summer, there was a sharp increase in AI slop referee reports I received as a journal editor. LLMs have been good for awhile, so not sure why the uptick is now. But, my god, are people shameless or oblivious that the AI slop is obvious?

Not to beat up on Douthat even more, but I'll just say: it has never, in all of post-war American history, been more crystal clear exactly who your enemy should be. Never. If it's not obvious to you, you are morally & intellectually defective.

What appeals to me about Zohran is that he governs with a strong moral compass, even where I don't agree with the policies. The discourse is affordability vs. fight vs. gerontocracy. But I think the lesson for 2028 is the hunger for a moral compass.

This version seems to have a different goal. It's probably on some list of cost-cutting ideas that administrators turn to. The world bank has done this, Princeton is now doing it, from Tim Bresnahan's comment, Stanford has done this or thought about it. It's just a matter of time for BU, James.

Seema Jayachandran @seema.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Agree that the core problem is no one is thinking about or valuing faculty productivity. Do you know how it's greener? I spent time at the World Bank this past year, and I found myself throwing out more that could have been recyclable if the slots were larger.

Seema Jayachandran @seema.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
The timing of this, as Princeton is trying to cut costs, makes me think that's the motive, but maybe that's wrong. In my experience, you have to throw away a lot of recyclables because the slots are small (e.g., plastic clamshells)

Seema Jayachandran @seema.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Do the cost savings from removing recycling and waste bins from offices really outweigh the productivity costs? The centralized bins and slots are small -- the setup is designed for you to stop working and walk from your office to the centralized bin for each piece of trash. Seems inane.
