In May of 1940 there was a mass panic in Britain - stirred up by the tabloid press - about 'fighting aged men' who had come to Britain as 'refugees' posing a threat to the women and children of this country - and essentially forming a 'fifth column' that could, at any moment rise up against everyone

The single most effective argument against Mosley’s BUF in the 30s, the one that really broke through with the masses, was that all the creepy fash stuff (esp. the uniforms) was *un-British*. That is the angle to keep pounding away at - the foreign donations, the obvious mimicry of the 🇺🇸 alt-right.

Lest we forget By the Ships page on Facebook Details in ALT
On this day; 11th August 1943 the Type VII C u-boat U-468 was depthcharged and sunk.
U-468 was ordered from Deutsche Werke AG, Kiel on 15th August 1940, was laid down on 1st July 1941, launched on 16th May19942 and commissioned on 12th August 1942.
She made three war patrols and sank just one British merchant ship, SS Empire Light on 12th March 1943.
On 7th July 1943 she departed La Pallice on her third and final patrol.
On 11th August 1943 whilst to the west of Dakar she was spotted by the B-24 Liberator BZ832 of 200 Squadron RAF piloted by F/O L.A. Trigg, RNZAF which had flown from the French airfield at Rufisque near Dakar, Senegal . At 09.45 hours despite being hit by flak several times and set on fire, the Liberator continued the attack and dropped six depth charges to port, then crashed into the sea, killing the crew of eight. Two depth charges fell very close, causing devastating damage to the stern of the U-boat, which sank rapidly shortly afterwards. Less than half of the crew managed to abandon ship, many being injured or poisoned by chlorine gas, and most drowned or died from exhaustion or shark attack. Only the commander and six others survived, having managed to reach a rubber dinghy that floated free from the aircraft wreck. The next day they were spotted by an RAF Short Sunderland of No. 204 Squadron and were picked up by the Flower class corvette HMS Clarkia(K88) on 13th August.
The seven survivors, including the boat's captain, Oblt. Klemens Schamong, of U-468 reported to their captors how their boat had been sunk and were so impressed by the Liberator's pilot's bravery in continuing the attack that they recommended that he should be awarded for bravery.
The result was that 2nd November 1943 F/O L.A. Trigg, RNZAF was awarded a posthumous VC. His award is unique, as it was awarded on evidence solely provided by the enemy, for an action in which there were no surviving Allied witnesses to corroborate his gallantry.
