Long Island right-NIMBYs are genuinely some of the worst people on earth. they’ll beg for a government handout in the form of NIMBY policies that artificially inflate the value of their homes, and then turn around and say that simply making it legal to build apartments is “charity” or something

crazy moment in the NY governor debate: Hochul says she wishes she pushed even harder on YIMBY policies, meanwhile, Blakeman literally *brags* about how his NIMBY policies have made housing so expensive

Dumbass. She wanted to put low income housing in our beautiful Nassau County. The people stuck together under Blakeman's leadership and stopped the socialist idiot. You're such a moron.
You have no clue what YOU are talking about. My $500,000 house in now worth $800,000. That's progress. We are not a charity.

Hadestown: (The Movie Of) The Musical is *very* good. Very good as in I now slightly regret not seeing it live in August when I scuttled past the Lyric multiple times to go to other shows. I don’t usually suggest that anyone should ever see musical theatre at all, so that’s a solid two thumbs up.

As I’m someone who generally prefers to firmly attach my name any time I criticise anything, I think it’d be better if politicians put their name to their backstabbing…but all the parties do it, and it’s not as though Minister O’Donovan hasn’t indulged in it: remember his Simon Harris leak sting op.

For the pittance it’s worth from me, Patrick O’Donovan declaring that his own people (finally) saying that he’s basically incompetent is actually an insult to everyone with a disability or a health condition that affects them is something that I find personally insulting. Not in my name, numptyboy.

Two cameras, two weeks, 19,000 violations without measuring speed or red light breaking. Pretty sure #Limerick could top this with a camera at the Shelbourne Road/Condell Road junction and another anywhere near the schools on the SCR/O'Connell Ave. It's getting worse out there. #RSA #RoadSafety

I mean, even mainly ignoring the dodgy rent review that wasn’t a rent review, even if you accept the “I need the property back for personal reasons” line (which the RTB did), the earlier eviction notice on the basis of a rent review that wasn’t a rent review is, ipso facto, shitbag behaviour.

I’m almost impressed (not in a good way) at the sheer brass neck of Rita McInerney, Clare county councillor (& GE candidate in Clare in 2020 & 2024 for Fianna Fáil) for unlawfully increasing tenant rent from €650 to €1500 & then evicting them. Shitbag behaviour. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/hous...

I strongly suspect that this is a made-up graph… but let’s run with it for a brief moment of joy… If Ukraine bombing a few Yandex data centres could cause that much of a drop in AfD and MAGA bots, it’d be a service to humanity where it might be the first bombing in history worthy of a peace prize.

I’d never heard this phrase until Joe Lycett used it on the telly talking about parking fines… and there it is on the front of the Bun because Micheal Martin is out there, taking another thing from us and making it uncool. (yells at tv: THAT MAN NEVER BUTTERED A PARSNIP IN HIS LIFE)
Front page of the Irish Sun, 8 Oct 2026. Massive headline reads “Micheal: We buttered a lot of parsnips”. There’s a headshot of Micheal Martin in the bottom corner, with the face of someone who’s suddenly sat on a parsnip, next to a tiny caption (probably rejected as the main headline) that reads “Butter believe it… Martin”.

One thing nobody ever mentions when they’re fear-mongering about this is that to even get a referral for a child, their neurodivergence has to be bothering OTHER people. It is SO HARD to get a diagnosis, let alone for children who don’t have outbursts or other “upsetting” behaviors.

If you went into a bank and asked for a loan, saying you’d put the proceeds into a savings account, they’d think you were a bit cracked. On a macro scale, that’s what Ireland is doing. This week’s column for @thejournal.ie:

€7.8 billion set aside for Ireland’s future in Budget 2027 means we're borrowing to save money
As the dust settles on the budget, isn’t it notable that Ireland is putting billions into long-term funds while borrowing money to pay the bills?

I’m kinda snobbish about cultural offerings and what should be or needs to be funded. I don’t think Spotify or the record industry or publishing need funding anywhere near as much as some venues or individual artists or writers. And I’m willing to bet that the important questions were never asked.
021
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I’m being generous here and assuming that the base cost of the vouchers was even costed. If so, I’m not surprised he was told to fuck off. At least he doesn’t appear to have been foolish enough (yet) to just divert other arts funding into this. That’s something.
131
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I’ll tell you what I think happened here: some lad (let’s say the Minister) got a sudden notion that other countries have done this, didn’t bother reading the complications there, didn’t bother with any of the details, and just multiplied two figures together and asked the Finance Minister for that.
124
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Do venues apply individually to be part of the scheme? Does it matter what particular events in those venues the voucher is used for (lots of cultural venues with lots of seats will also host boring conference things: do they qualify?) How do they get paid?
130
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Who’s administering it and distributing the vouchers or voucher-like scrip? If it isn’t means-tested and it’s the government, that’s at least a cheap admin, so now you’re using POS numbers? Are you going to allow for some fraud (there’s going to be some) or go all Recent Fine Gael Paranoia?
120
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
to Actual Cultural Things, which obviously would include opera or ballet or theatre, but how about cinema (art house or free for all including Michael Bay?), or books or gigs or a Spotify sub? Art classes? Vinyl records? Museums? A xylophone? How about an escape room or an FAi game?
120
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I’m pretty sure the relevant minister (oh, Christ, it’s Patrick O’Donovan again, innit) may not… er, definitely didn’t consider whether it’d be a free for all on culture (in France, your Pass Culture could buy video games: I’m sure the Irish dog racing twats would claim it’s culture) or restricted..
141
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Actually, maybe I shouldn’t have listed Germany as a headline case of culture pass fraud, as budget constraints, the pass being funded by diversion of other arts funding (rather than additional funding) and anon costs were bigger problems. Anyway, that’s been slashed too.
130
Seamus Ryan @seamusryan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In France, the Pass Culture scheme (€500, later €380, now half that) was drastically reduced and reconfigured when youngsters raised they could buy in-demand concert tickets and reflog them for actual cash (often at scalper rates) on resale apps later.
