E. M. Tice Faced Grand Jury Action on Serious Charge
Edward M. Tice, 54, who was soon to face the Grand Jury on a serious charge, today chose death instead.

Some time during the night, without the knowledge of the members of his family, Tice entered the barn at the rear of his home in Onativia. He climbed upon a buggy, fastened a rope about his neck, and tied the other end to a rafter. Then he stepped from the vehicle.

Kenneth Tice, a son, discovered the body about 8 o'clock this morning. He summoned Dr. C. S. Williams, of Lafayette, who pronounced Tice dead.

Absence of a husband for 12 years is sufficient reason for the granting to his wife of a decree of dissolution of marriage, according to a decision handed down by Supreme Court Justice Larkin yesterday.

The decision was rendered in the case of Mrs. Minnie Estelle Hammond, 811 Montgomery Street, whose husband, Albert H. Hammond, disappeared Sept. 1, 1914, and despite widespread search, has not been seen or heard of since.

Child Tells of Battling Step-father When He Struck Wife

A 14-year-old girl was the star witness for her mother yesterday afternoon in a separation action brought by Mrs. Lottie M. Coe, against James Coe, Jordan farmer.

Little Frances Roberts, a pupil in Jordan High School, described to Justice Larkin in special term how she fought with her step-father, James Coe, after the man had beaten her mother, knocking her down.

She said:
"When I went into the house one night last July I found my step-father sitting on my mother on the floor. He was punching her and I grabbed him by the collar and tried and yanked until I pulled him away from her."

Mrs. Coe declared that her husband was very abusive when he was under the influence of intoxicants.

Mrs. Mabel Hammer Ryan, 16, whose married life was shattered after 10 days, also appeared in court yesterday and asked for an annulment of her marriage to Stephen Ryan, 21, a chauffeur.

ALEXANDRIA BAY MAN HELD IN DEATH OF REDWOOD BOYCharged With Having Pushed Orin Evans Inti St. Lawrence River Saturday Night During Drinking Bout Arthur Lefebre, 27, of Alexandria Bay, is in the Jefferson county jail at Watertown, facing arraignment before City Judge Joseph McConnell today on a serious charge. Lefebre is charged with pushing Orrin Evans, 23, of Redwood, into the St. Lawrence river at the Bay Saturday night and causing his death. According to Deputy Sheriff Ginn, who with District Attorney E. Robert Wilcox, investigated the drowning of Evans, and who arrested Lefebre, the Redwood youth toppled into the river at Alexandria Bay and was drowned when Lefebre slapped him on the back as they stood on a dock. The two men, with Harry Hunniwell, were standing talking when the accident occurred. "This is a great night for a swim, boys," Lefebre said as he slapped his two friends on the back, Hunniwell told the officers. Evans lost his balance, fell into the stream and before aid could be rendered, vanished. Evans' body was recovered 20 minutes later by James Dingman, of Alexandria Bay, who used grappling irons in his search of the river. Following an investigation Deputy Sheriff Ginn took Lefebre into custody Sunday morning. Jefferson county authorities told the Republican-Journal last night that the prisoner had confessed to his part in the death saying he had been drinking. Lefebre a short time ago was arrested in Omar on a charge of disorderly conduct and was fined. At that time Lefebre gave his name as A. L. Johnson. Lefebre is a married man and has one child but has been estranged from his wife for some time officers assert. Evans was unmarried.
