Great read, @nathanburgoine.bsky.social, and great points. (I can’t write anything *but* shoulder-checking characters; it comes too naturally to this hypervigilant human-who-writes. Esp. true for my Myriad of Simon Hansen series, given the gay MC is navigating 1990s Dublin…) shorturl.at/HsZyS

This has been my experience as someone who’s both been in therapy & knows just.too.many.people in therapy who do this exactly and are extremely toxic to others (see also: hurt people hurt people). It’s def helped some people, but that’s on the patient more than the doc, and I see only rare results.

There's a whole lot of bs writing-coach advice out there that's framed for people with limited talent because it makes it easier to produce acceptable results. But a lot of it has become so prevalent that people think anything that doesn't conform is bad writing

Look, friends. I know that you don't think it's much. But the NYT Puzzles app is very much propping up the NYT's ideologically driven hate campaign against trans people. You gotta let your streak go. There are so many other puzzles out there you could be playing that won't fund hate.

Whenever I hear rare or OOP book news, I immediately think about MYRIAD’s MC and peripheral characters. I’m glad they’re fictional because this would just kill them dead. I’m bereft. People who destroy rare/unique cultural history are psychotic, full stop.

Oh and by the way, things like google pivoting to AI set us back BEFORE the modern internet, not just before google, due to their monopoly. "Moving everything to AI" is actually about disabling the agency of individual people. It's deleting the massive cultural memory that the internet represents.

'We got evidence of boars, deer, bears, aurochs': Ancient DNA reveals sunken realm Doggerland had habitable forests during the last ice age
A landmass that once connected Britain to mainland Europe had temperate forests that could have sustained Stone Age people for millennia before the landmass was flooded, a new study suggests.

Bafflingly there are still people out there in the world who think being passionate about nature is “kind of weird”. or “a niche interest”. These people have it all wrong. Nature isn’t some quirky sideline to the main business. It IS the main business.

Happy Mothering Sunday!
Happy Mothering Sunday!

Title: Just in time for Mother's Day: Classic literature with added Mums

Panel 1: Moby Dick
"Ahab! Moby! Enough of this nonsense. Apologise to each other and if you can't get along, stay apart." says Ahab's mother, standing in a little boat and looking sternly into Moby's eye, while her son sits chastened behing her.

Panel 2: Casino Royale.
"Vodka martini, shaken not stirred... And a sweet sherry for my mother."
says James Bond. His mother calls over from their table "Just a little one."

Panel 3: The Lord of the Rings.
"You can look for your ring after you tidy your room and walk the dog, Sauron."
says Sauron's mother, holding out the dog lead to her son, who replies "Aw, mum!".
