Dolly Parton was the antithesis of the hate & division we see in the world today. She knew who she was & never made herself smaller to fit in - an extraordinary trait for any woman, but especially one born in 1946. Thanks for the big hair and the even bigger heart. We love you, Dolly. ❤️

Some good, old-fashioned research comes to the rescue. Finally found a document I've been hunting for for weeks - and for which I'd eliminated every indexed source I could think of - by scrolling through 1340 pages of digitized-but-not-indexed microfilm. Time consuming but oh so satisfying!

Researching a Scottish farming family who conveniently stayed put in one location for generations. After a stretch of attempting to hunt down largely itinerant ag labs, I'm ridiculously grateful to this bunch for their stability!

The ferry departed and the car alarms started. It’s a multi-alarm chorus. Feels just like home!

The view from the special collections reading room at the National Library of Scotland is a teeny bit distracting.
The view out the window over the roofs of nearby buildings to the bottom of Arthur’s Seat and the Firth in the distance all below a blue sky with puffy white clouds.

This is one of my absolute favourite descriptions about a painting in any gallery I’ve ever seen. And more than 100 years later, 2 million visitors a year at the National Gallery of Scotland get to see what a good boy Callum was. @weratedogs.com
A placard beside a painting of a dog. It reads, “John Emms (1843–1912)

The Dandie Dinmont terrier originated in the Scottish Borders. It is named after a farmer in Guy Mannering (1815), a Walter Scott novel. Scott had Dandie Dinmonts called Ginger and Spice. In 1919 James Cowan Smith (1839–1919) bequeathed £52,257 (over £2 million today) to buy art for this gallery. He had one condition: the portrait of his beloved Callum must remain on permanent display. Thanks to his bequest, paintings by Velázquez, Goya, Raeburn, Constable, Sargent and Mackintosh joined the collection.

A view from the south-east of Stac Pollaidh or "Stack Polly", north of Ullapool in Wester Ross. At 2,008ft or 612m in height, this is a mountain that easily makes up in character and charm for what it lacks in stature. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #StacPollaidh #WesterRoss
Stac Pollaidh. The image shows a mountain slope descending from right to left in the foreground with a narrow road leading around it. There’s a bus on the road. Further back and on the left is a body of water and in the distance is a mountain with a jagged summit ridge extending from right to left back into the frame. The scene is in sunlight.

Met this chatty couple while visiting Ballindalloch Castle. First ran into him at the very top of the stairs inside. They were on an action-packed day trip for seniors. I was astonished when they told me they were 90. May I be that active and interested in exploring still when I'm their age!
