Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

every billionaire & tech mogul, they all want to be adored & celebrated without doing the things Dolly did with a fraction of the power & money. What she had, she gave away. I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸

Dolly Parton was the antithesis of the hate & division we see in the world today. She knew who she was & never made herself smaller to fit in - an extraordinary trait for any woman, but especially one born in 1946. Thanks for the big hair and the even bigger heart. We love you, Dolly. ❤️

Some good, old-fashioned research comes to the rescue. Finally found a document I've been hunting for for weeks - and for which I'd eliminated every indexed source I could think of - by scrolling through 1340 pages of digitized-but-not-indexed microfilm. Time consuming but oh so satisfying!

Anyone who describes their critique style as "brutally honest" doesn't get to critique my work. If I hear how a critique group is so helpful because they rip things to shreds, I'll never bring my work to that group. Helping others grow as writers does not require violence.

This is one of my absolute favourite descriptions about a painting in any gallery I’ve ever seen. And more than 100 years later, 2 million visitors a year at the National Gallery of Scotland get to see what a good boy Callum was. @weratedogs.com
A placard beside a painting of a dog. It reads, “John Emms (1843–1912)
Callum, 1895

The Dandie Dinmont terrier originated in the Scottish Borders. It is named after a farmer in Guy Mannering (1815), a Walter Scott novel. Scott had Dandie Dinmonts called Ginger and Spice. In 1919 James Cowan Smith (1839–1919) bequeathed £52,257 (over £2 million today) to buy art for this gallery. He had one condition: the portrait of his beloved Callum must remain on permanent display. Thanks to his bequest, paintings by Velázquez, Goya, Raeburn, Constable, Sargent and Mackintosh joined the collection.
Bequest of James Cowan Smith 1919 (NG 1226)”A photo of the framed John Emma painting of Callum the dog looking very pleased with himself. There is a dead rat on the ground on its back just in front on Callum.

Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/

Did some airplane travel this week- the number of people back to wearing masks over hantavirus and Ebola is truly shocking.
I feel sad for the people who live their lives in fear over over-hyped, extremely rare diseases.
People, so fearful that they can't go out in public or travel without masks...
I pity them, I worry for their mental health, I even worry for our country that has so many guillible people - but these poor fools are not my enemy.

Wider human rights limitations are now underway—limiting human rights for immigrants does not just limit their human rights, it limits them for all of us. Most people do not understand this. The price will be theirs—all of ours—to pay. Human rights are universal. Or they are not.

I must say again—because so many do not see this: fascism does not start with concentration camps, that is where it can end. It starts with hollowing out the rule of law; with limiting rights; with denying some of us their existence on the basis of who they are. So that is where must be stopped.
