My records say built 1859, then rebuilt 1864 when it burned down. Built partly for Inglis & Wakefield, Calico Printers at Busby. Alexander Miller Jnr of said firm was a Thomson fan. Thomson had remodelled Busby House for his father, and Alex Jnr moved next door to Thomson at 2 Moray Place!

Went to lend a hand at #CamphillDig26 today. While the team have yet to determine if the site's residents were Iron Age, Roman or Mediaeval, we now at least know that they were regular users of Glasgow's tram network. Congrats to fellow #SGHET volunteer Dougie for finding it in our pit.

An even rarer 19th century feature would be Chappui's light reflectors. They reflected sunlight through windows into dark offices, before electric light became the norm. #glasgow #streetfurniture #strathbungo #astonvilla

Snap, Morrisons in Crossmyloof Glasgow. I think it's installed back to front or up side down, and too close to the wall, but to be honest I have no idea how it is supposed to be used.
Weird bike rack, with bikes locked either side, bike rack itself is unusable.

Didn't realise until recently that famed 602 (City of Glasgow) AuxAF Squadron had its HQ in Coplaw Street, next to the old Third Lanark Drill Hall. Here's a potted history of 602 and the building, now sadly lost.
Two-storey rendered building with pitched roof and ventilator on top. Two-storey stone portico with RAF badge over door, and another wrapped around the corner of the building.

Another #Strathbungo #househistory. This time we're at the former 25 Princes Square, better known now as 55 Marywood Square. The first resident was Robert Murdoch, a mason who built Cragie St police & fire station, and the next Robert More, a maker & retailer of fine silk gowns on Buchanan Street.

As a former radiologist, I am well aware that Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays in November 1895, and by March 1896, the Glasgow Royal Infirmary had already opened the world's first X-ray department. X-rays caught on really fast. What I didn't know was that by January 1897, you could also...

Just discovered that Moray Place used to be gated; there was a gate outside Alexander Greek Thomson's house at 1 Moray Place on two maps of 1893. So that adds to the previous discovery that Regent Park Square was gated too. #strathbungo #glasgowhistory #alexandergreekthomson #morayplace

Argh! The myth that will never die! Not sure where this one originated, but there's so many of these on Facebook, etc, spouting the same nonsense. This house was built in 1874 and that's the chimney flue! There's a chimney above it, bit of a clue.
Image from social media with myth about window tax. Sandstone house with symetrical window openings either side of the porch. Ones on the left are infilled in sandstone, not to avoid window tax as stated, but to hide the chimney flue.

The distinctive decorative pierced iron work, painted entirely white, give the structure a light and elegant appearance, accentuated by its pierced saltire lattice-work, Greek motifs, gothic spandrels and distinctive 'ha'penny' roundels.

I tend to ignore the theories as to the origin of the moniker Strathbungo, as none are convincing. It turns out one of the most prevalent, that Bungo is a sort of corruption of St Mungo, was made up by some shit-stirrer from Govanhill. This from the Southern Press 1895:
A Govanhill man claims to be author of the “Strath-Mungo” explanation of the word “Strathbungo,” and feels somewhat proud that his creation is now more popular than any of the other explanations. His self-satisfaction is justifiable when one considers the long start given to the others — both the corruption of the milkman’s angry exclamation “tak’ the straw oot the bung-hole” and a suggestion that an old burn in the district was known as the “Bungo.”

A house history for 21 Marywood Square, formerly known as 42 Princes Square. Built by James Robertson in 1884, though he then went bust. First occupant John Andersons was from a family of printers, although his uncle had jacked it in to go to sea, and became Captain of Brunel's SS Great Eastern.

Curiously I was reading (and writing) about the Swedenborgians only recently. In the report of one of their meetings they implied they didn't have any proper churches before the 1880s, though I found one in Paisley (opened 1860, closed 2019), and the Edinburgh is older still.

Built by Andrew McIntyre, who bought the land in 1880, but it wasn't ready until 1886. McIntyre was previously a gold digger present at the "birth of Australian democracy", when his jailing for rioting led to an armed insurrection known as the Eureka Stockade.

Mrs McIntyre was Janet Auld (1852-1916), the wife of Archibald McIntyre. Her father-in-law was Andrew McIntyre, who built the terrace. In 1851 Andrew took his new wife and infant son Archibald half way round the world to join the Aussie Gold Rush, and live in a tent. #Strathbungo
