Mass breeding of game birds without welfare checks may be curtailed in England
Campaigners say pheasants and partridges reared ‘on industrial scale’ do not have same protections as chickens The government is considering a crackdown on pheasant shooting in England as part of a consultation on strict new animal welfare laws that would affect shoot organisers. Ministers are already considering plans for the issuing of licences for those who run game bird shoots. The proposals mean anybody associated with wildlife crime, such as the poisoning or shooting of birds of prey, would be banned from hosting shooting events. Continue reading...

Climate change is already impacting birds across the UK. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and more frequent extreme weather can shape where species live, how common they are and the timing of breeding and migration. Some of the UK’s most vulnerable birds are already declining.
Puffin sits on grassy ledge. Text reads Climate change is driving major shifts for our birds. Seabird species could decline by more than 70% by 2050 and upland species are also particularly vulnerable.Golden Plover lit in golden light. Text says Some of the key areas of impact identified include changing species distribution, loss of seasonal food, growing pressure on protected areas.

Protected areas should safeguard our most important places for nature - but new data reveals sharp declines in monitoring which puts these precious places at risk 🚨 Monitoring is essential to be able to deliver the urgent action nature needs to thrive. We must do better for Scotland’s wildlife.
Heavily mossy covered trees in Scottish rainforestWhite text on green background reads: Earlier this year, the Scottish Parliament passed the Natural Environment Act. This is the most significant piece of nature legislation in over a decade, equipping the newly elected Scottish Government with powers to set legally-binding nature recovery targets. These figures underline exactly why these powers are needed. The Scottish Government must urgently bring forward ambitious nature recovery targets, underpinned with the investment needed to monitor progress and to translate these commitments into reality.
