Dornie is edging closer to the log burner. She has avoided it for 4 years, ever since she jumped on to it while it was on. This is the first time she has settled anywhere near it - normally retreats to a chair.

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.

What on earth is happening?
  This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

Impressive. We were treated to hundreds of them around the birch tree in our garden in N Yorks a few weeks ago. The clip doesn’t do it justice - there were a lot more than can be seen - but I had never seen this behaviour before. It looked very much like swarming bats.
