Comprehensive sex education does reduce sexual violence perpetration. But the most effective programs are in a K-12 environment. This is a fight we should be having with public school districts and state legislatures.

One thing that I think we shpuld always bear in mind when talking about why, say, liberal politicians fold so easily on trans rights is that a lot of cis people just desperately want to be transphobic and will seize on any excuse to do so no matter how flimsy.

It's relatively recent that there was any recognition in the mainstream that trans people are actual human beings and not scary movie monsters or walking punchlines. That was something we had to fight for and the people we fought are seeing their chance to relitigate it and roll shit back.

I'm not gonna quote post that estrangement article doing the rounds cos I ain't giving them the metrics but part of being in queer community is knowing a lot of people who are estranged from family. None of them broke contact for trivial reasons.

The moral panic around estrangement is backlash against the small amount of cultural progress we have made for familial abuse survivors. Against the idea that parents don't get to hurt their kids, against the absolute tyranny of the heteropatriarchal family.

People are very resistant to the idea that patriarchy is about a relationship to power. Is every man abusive? No, plainly not. But patriarchy affords them the ability to misuse their power in a way that people of other genders cannot. So the more power they accumulate, the greater that temptation.

the friction thing is so important too. you know what’s hard? asking an abuser to leave the room. you don’t need to ask the victim to leave, so if you don’t do anything, the situation resolves itself without friction. excluding victims is so much easier.

One of the many frustrating things about intimate violence becoming viral discourse is the number of people who will confidently declare the area of study I’ve dedicated the last 8 years of my life to just doesn’t exist. That no feminist has seriously attempted to answer these questions before.

It’s simply not true that “no one has a good answer on what to do with rapists.” In fact, there is a depth of feminist scholarship on exactly this subject. It’s just that people won’t engage with it seriously since none of it says “nah you gotta be nice to the rapist cause that’s your buddy.”

To rape is to become an enemy. To rape is to stand with the patriarchy and become one of its shock troops. It is to step beyond simple membership of the oppressor class and to become a direct enforcer of that oppression. Why the fuck should that line be different to a nazi?

There a lines a person can cross which make them the enemy. Which make their humanity irrelevant to how we deal with them. Leftists are cool with this for fascists. Cool with it for cops. Many are cool with it for soldiers in Imperial armies. Some even for snitches. But not for rapists.

(and the main criticism of RJ/TJ is that whatever it is supposed to accomplish in theory, *in practice* it usually amounts to mandatory forgiveness coerced directly on the victim. you're extending that to "since mandatory forgiveness is a foregone conclusion, the victim need not be involved at all")

completely apart from criticisms of RJ/TJ as a model--by definition they cannot be done without victim involvement. you can't claim to want "an RJ/TJ perspective" without the survivor involved, that's not how it works. all that means is you want to initiate the process of mandatory forgive & forget

really don't like when pieces like this bring up the carceral state or a carceral mindset when talking about someone who is facing purely social consequences. i think it's really dangerous to frame any & all negative reactions to terrible behavior as carceral. it does not help the work of abolition.

social consequences can coexist with and be a part of restorative justice. in fact i don't see how you can eliminate them without curtailing people's freedom of association. losing out on rewards, opportunities, and acclaim is absolutely compatible with restorative & reparative justice.

Banger. Frankly a salve against people weaponizing the language of accountability against survivors.
Our goal is not for every single person to feel comfortable and validated, our goal is to end cycles of harm. Fundamental change in the people who enact harm is by far our preference, but lacking that we understand that our responsibility is then to reduce or destroy their capacity to continue to enact harm on others. We don’t just sit on our hands and hope we can eventually convince them to change at the same time that their enacting of that harm continues to work in their own interest because they’re surrounded by people who think consequences for harm is the same as throwing someone in prison

If it’s a social dynamic worth critiquing, it’s worth critiquing with accuracy. Find a way to do it without flattening the differences between an interpersonal conflict and the organized violence of mass incarceration.

Reminder that “carceral logic” is literally about state and medical *incarceration* in its various forms. It is NOT a shorthand for “any social consequences happening at all.” If a response doesn’t include involving organized authoritarian apparatuses and agents: it’s not carceral!
