The only ‘no go zones’ in Britain are gated communities, country estates full of, or owned by rich, largely white folk. And don’t get me started on the villages they’ve basically ‘enclosed’ on the north Norfolk coast.

I'm also a connoisseur of weird or auction lots. A few years ago I spotted this collection of crowns of thorns on sale in Germany. As far as I remember they were going very cheap but, nevertheless, I wasn't tempted.
A collection of crowns of thorns there's about eight of them in total laid on a table they vary quite substantially in size and one of them isn't really thorns at all it's carved out of wood

The post isn't even internally consistent. If the UK "is taxing itself to death", and if Laffer is right that "taxes can become so punitive they reduce revenues", then why would lowering taxes require you to cut spending?

Really good piece on whether free UK museums should move to charge. Great point on the weird incentives here from Chris Smith - would those who are successful in getting commercial income just open the door to losing state support? www.ft.com/content/f243...
Smith, the former culture secretary, says the push for charging "has come from the Treasury... They thought it would be an easy and attractive way of raising money, given the difficult fiscal picture.
"But of course for the museums that did charge, the Treasury would just claw back a portion of the grant-in-aid that they give them," he adds. "So we would not see a new dawn for the sector, just a fall-off in visitors, reputational strength and soft power."

Just been reminded of this. Newer friends and followers may not know of that type 11 years ago when I was writing for the Guardian and finally snapped at their ludicrous image archive setup and it got published on the actual site. #cake #breakdown
A cake
I Do you know how long l've spent in the Guardian's image archives to find a picture of a bog
standard cake? Bloody ages! Thousands of images and not one thing that you'd recognise as a
normal cake. This weird ice cream thing is the best I could do. Everything else has a sodding fried
egg or a bunch of parsley obscuring it, or has been arranged to resemble a Picasso painting or a
sculpture reflecting the futility of existence. When did this place becore riddled with hipsters?

If you were living in Europe in the 1580s and 90s, you would likely have heard a few herring prophecies from Norway. Fishes with words about evil, fighting knights symbolizing the Ottoman conflicts of the Habsburg monarchy etc. appeared, and they all predicted something about the state of the world.

My late mother once had a decapitated pigeon on her front path and *her postman offered to dispose of it* but she turned him down saying 'no thank you, my daughter can deal with that', so the corpse got to fester and incubate maggots for a couple additional days before I encountered it.

From the words of one Charles Sternberg:
I might have sold to showmen or dealers; in fact I have the assurance of one of the largest dealers in America that I made a great mistake in selling directly to museums instead of selling through him. If I had done as he advised, the thousands of fossils I have collected would have cost the museums fifty percent more than they have, and my work would have been measured by the money these dealers would have been pleased to allow me, and I should have never been known as one of those who have devoted their lives to the advancement of paleontology.

Why on earth are these sweets called Drumsticks? Even describing the resemblance as minimal would be an act of charity.
A packet of pink and white sweets called Swizzle squashies drumstick. The sweets themselves are essentially small flat pink and white rectangles and their resemblance to drumsticks doesn't really go much beyond them being solid rather than liquid or gas.

FFS Plusnet! It appears that the only way to opt out of this customer satisfaction nagging is to have somehow had lightning reflexes and managed to text back STOP to the first SMS before the second one appeared about two seconds later.
This is a screenshot of an SMS conversation between myself and Plusnet they contact me and try and paste to me and to taking part in some customer service fractions of a with the option to opt out by texting stop back but then they send me second SMS a couple of seconds after the first one and asking me to give values between zero and ten I text back stop but by this time it's too late apparently to actually stop this and it refuses to accept any response other than the number it really pissed me off this
